NHL Winter Classic: Buffalo vs Pittsburgh Live Thread

It's not just a day for college football. The NHL has put together a brilliant idea to market the sport and are playing outside in Buffalo this afternoon. Michigan and Michigan State were the first to play outdoors on a football field in 2003.

Great atmosphere at the game with snow falling. Couldn't have asked for a better setting.

The Penguins wearing blue is very confusing.

Snow on the ice, that's classic.

Wow, Ralph Wilson is packed.  Good call NHL, they sold out an NFL stadium.

LOL, Ryan Miller has a little snow hat on top of his helmet.  That's priceless.

Great idea by the NHL. It's about time they had one! Huge crowd...but I can't imagine they can see much, what with the distance from the ice and the snow.

This game is going to last until Wednesday with all of the stops to fix the ice/clear snow.

Gary Bettman finally figured out a way to market his sport. I surprisingly watching a fair amount of this game and I never watch hockey.

Good thing I have HD.

The picture is a little fuzzy.  And it's a slightly different angle than I am used to.

But it is still pretty cool!

And the huge crowd sounds totally into this.

It's really a great idea!

I hope they do this every year in different NHL towns.

This is great. I hope it becomes a yearly event on New Year's Day.

Knowing Gary Bettman, it won't.  Because having this every year would make too much sense.

Unfortunately the snow and ice problems are bogging this game down and neither team can capture any momentum with all the extended stoppage

I was thinking the same thing.

The constant stopping of play is the only negative about this I can come up with.

It's still a great idea though.

This game is like old school hockey, it's slow, it's low scoring, but yet it's still very entertaining.  Hard to have offense with the snow and wind.  This ones' going to the shootout.

Shootout time!  And the crowd loves it!

And Crosby finishes it!

Wow, what a great game.  Hope this tradition continues.  Plus, the NHL is doing flex scheduling this year, that should make Saturday's excellent.

I like the flex schedule...

But it is a double edge sword.

Will NBC pick the games with the most relevance?  Or will they simply pick games they feel will give them the bigger audience?

Michigan and Michigan State were the first to play outdoors on a football field in 2003.  There were the second the first was in 1981 it was a preseason game in Las Vegas when New York Rangers and LA Kings meet.

They definitely should do this every Jan 1st.  I can't believe I actually switched over from most of the Michigan-Florida game to watch this.  If the NHL can get folks like me to do that then they definitely got something on their hands.  This goes up there on what the NHL needs to do alongside getting a better TV deal and requiring the home team to wear white again.

I think the Winter Classic should switch back and forth between the US and Canada every year.  I hope next year's could be held in Toronto, then Detroit, Montreal, then start to evaluate who can hold the rest from there, maybe Chicago, New York, Denver etc.

Was it back in '81?  I could have sworn it was in the late 80's early 90's some time when they did it.  They did it two pre seasons in a row.  The first time, it was just two teams, then the next year a 2nd team played the Kings on that make shift parking lot ice rink.
