NHL Wrap Around 5-29
Penguins Pick Up 3-2 Home Win, Series 2-1 DET
>7 days ago
Who’s one step closer to hoisting Lord Stanley? The Wrap-Around is your daily update for last nights’ NHL Playoff action.Detroit had more shots as they do most games, however the Penguins had many more good chances. Shot total was 34-24. Marc-Andre Fleury was solid in net, only allowing two goals on 34 shots. Faceoffs were pretty even, while Detroit had double the giveaways of Pittsburgh.
The first goal of the game didn't happen until very late in the 1st period. Brad Stuart turned it over in their own zone, which was taken by Marian Hossa, who quickly passed it to Sidney Crosby who 5-holed Osgood. That would give the Penguins a 1-0 lead after one Detroit had 9 shots to Pittsburgh's 6. Early in the 2nd period, Niklas Kronwall got a hooking penalty, and the Penguins would take a 2-0 lead off of the powerplay. Crosby scored once again, with help from Hossa and Malone.
Detroit would get their first goal 15 minutes through the 2nd. Hal Gill got his second straight cross check penalty while defending Tomas Holmstrom, and Johan Franzen went hard to the net and scored on the powerplay, making the game 2-1. Shots were almost even for the game after two periods at 19-17 in favor of Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh would take a 3-1 lead a 8 minutes through the 3rd. Osgood would get way out of position trying to play a puck behind the net, and Adam Hall would put it in off of Osgood to score for the Penguins. Both teams then played without a stoppage for over 5 minutes, with great chances for both teams, including a shot off the post by Detroit. However, no goals were scored. On the next opportunity, Detroit would score to make it 3-2, as a Mikael Samuelsson's shot went in after deflecting off a Penguin. Detroit would get another powerplay chance, but would be unable to score, as the Penguins would hold on to win 3-2.
The series is now 2-1 Detroit, game 4 is on Saturday. That game in Pittsburgh is 8 PM ET on NBC/CBC.
