Last September, the NHL began to take control of teams' official webiste. The Rangers were very stubborn about letting their site go under the control of the NHL, and sued them under the belief that the NHL was violating the anti-trust laws. Madison Sqare Garden officials said that the league "violated the league's anti-trust laws by monoplolizing control of team promotions. A judge ruled in November that the league seemed within its rights to take control of the team's Web site." (wnbc.com).
In return, the NHL is filing court papers, including a draft letter from commisioner Gary Bettman proposing discipline against Jim Dolan, the owner of MSG, claiming that he and MSG officials violated its contract by challenging league rules. The rules they challenged? Accusing league officials of violating those anti-trust laws.
Now, this is as not serious as it may seem- the league is only threatening to kick Madison Square Garden out of the league as punishment to Jim Dolan, not the Rangers team. However, this is serious for Ranger fans and for New York City. If this accusation by Bettman goes through, the Rangers will no longer be able to play in MSG and will have to find a new arena. This would also force the Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, and Buffalo Sabres to find new television stations- the Devils and Islanders used to be on FSNY (Fox Sports New York), but recently had a station change to MSG+. The Rangers and Sabres both air on MSG.
Ok, now that you have heard the facts, it's time for my opinion...
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH BETTMAN??? GET OVER IT! Nobody can even question your greatness now, oh almighty dictator? Sure, it may be in the contract, but if you weren't such a control freak in the first place and had to run every team's site, this would not have happened. This is becoming more and more Bettman's league and less the league for the fans
