Remember, everybody, that you can't spell “ugly win” without w-i-n. The New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings played one awful Monday Night Football game, but Big Blue will happily take the result that earned the team its first victory of 2013. New York is now out of the basement of NFL power rankings, but the club also hasn't climbed far up lists after one successful evening.

The ESPN NFL writers see the Giants as the best one-win team in the league. New York rose to 29 in their latest power rankings. ESPN reminded readers of what can happen when a side doesn't give the ball away: “The Giants won the turnover battle for the first time all season Monday night, and it resulted in win No. 1.”

Senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco gave a little more love to the Giants than did the ESPN crew. He has the Giants at 28. “At least the defense showed some life,” Prisco pointed out. That unit will have to do more than just show life against the Philadelphia Eagles this coming weekend.

Frank Schwab agreed with ESPN and placed the Giants at 29. He didn't have high praise for either New York or Minnesota after what he saw last night. “That game on Monday night was one of the worst we'll see in the NFL this season. Or in many seasons,” stated Schwab. He isn't overstating the matter. That was a nearly unwatchable affair.

I'm starting to notice a trend. Former NFL head coach and current TV analyst Brian Billick also put New York at 29. Plenty of people have criticized the play of Eli Manning in 2013, and deservedly so. Billick pointed out that Manning alone isn't the issue for the New York offense: “How did Eli Manning and Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks lose all their chemistry? It looks like they have never played together.”

It's another set of NFL power rankings that has the Giants at 29 after the team's first win of the campaign. “On Monday night, (New York) looked good enough to beat a really bad team, but not good enough to beat anyone else,” claimed Mike Florio. That's a rather fair assessment.

The Giants didn't get a lot of hometown loving from Hank Gola. He also rose New York to just 29th in his Week 8 NFL power rankings. “Winning ugly never felt so good,” Gola wrote.
It's difficult to argue that the Giants deserve to be above 28-29 in any NFL power rankings after Monday night. Yes, the win was nice, but four quarters of ugly football that results in a victory does not a season save. New York has plenty to prove this coming weekend at Philadelphia. I still see the Giants as a lost cause this fall, and that isn't changing until the team proves otherwise.
