The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials continued Monday in Omaha, Nebraska, and so did the world record breaking. Earlier this afternoon, two records were smashed in a matter of minutes IN PRELIM HEATS. That's how ridiculous the sport of swimming has become to someone who only watches once every four years. Are the swimmers getting this much faster every year, or is it merely the new swimsuits in pools?
Either way, the feat accomplished in the 100-meter backstroke today was impressive. Natalie Coughlin, who won five medals for the US at the Athens games, was awaiting her turn when Hayley McGregory broke her previous world record time of 59.21 with a 59.15.
Displaying the competitive fire necessary to be an Olympic swimmer, Coughlin stole her record back in the very next race with a 59.09. Hope you enjoy your one minute of glory, Hayley.
Seeing as how this was just a prelim, you can expect a few more records to shatter tomorrow.
