Nebraska's New Head Coach: Tom Osborne
Today Tom Osborne named the next Nebraska head coach.

Himself.

Don't worry though, just on an interim basis so that Osborne can begin recruiting while he decides (Pelini!) who he should select (Pelini!) to replace Bill Callahan himself.
"Osborne plans to hit the road today and Friday.

NCAA rules stipulate that the head coach is allowed only one in-home visit to a potential recruit. But a provision allows the coach Osborne hires to visit any recruit whom Osborne visited as interim head coach.

In addition, Osborne could remain on staff, technically as an assistant, to visit recruits after the head coach is named."
Talk about having to follow in a legend's footsteps. Now the next coach (Pelini!) will literally have to do so. This move actually leads me to believe Bo Pelini will be the man, because he's notoriously a bad recruiter and has often not been allowed to interact with recruits on the first face-to-face ... hence Osborne making sure Nebraska locks down a few commits before Pelini scares the bejesus out of them.

I sure hope he can handle the tremendous pressure that comes with being the Nebraska Head Coach.

Someone needs to explain to Tom Osborne that if he truly loves Nebraska football, the best thing he can do for it is to disappear.

I disagree with this to a point.  Callahan and Pederson alienated Husker Nation.  He is a positive to bringing the fans back.  I don't know of any Husker Fan that wants Tom in either the AD or Coach role permanently, but to bring back goodwill between the Team and the Fans, it's a good start.

And of course, if the whole point of the interim thing is to be recruiting, yeah that's something that Tom knows.

I agree with you. Osborne being around provides some stability and accountability for the next head coach and brings some identity back to Husker Nation, who was in the process of losing it.

I'm sure you know more about it than I do. As an outsider, I see him just being a pain in the arse for whoever takes over the job. I wouldn't want the job when the legend is still in the picture, even if it is behind the scenes.

When Solich was Coach, Osborne was doing politics in DC.  Pederson and Callahan alienated.  Osborne is a legend (at least in Nebraska), he is a native of Nebraska, and he is one of the nicest men I have ever met.  He does not want to cause a scene, he wants what is best for the University.  He will not meddle.  He came back as recognizable figure, not as someone who wants their hand in the cookie jar.  That is not the person he is.

Sure thing. I need an Illini break today, after last night's poor showing. I'm not homicidal like some in Illini Nation today however. The message boards were just full of doom and gloom after the game, but I guess that is normal. Message board posters in general are slightly unhinged! LOL

yeah and nobody has ever proven that on the message boards here.  nc state fans arent too happy either.  not so much that they lost, but that they were never in it.

Don't you mean Bellevue? I am an Air Force brat, my family spent 7 years there in the 1970s. My earliest sports memory is of Nebraska winning the title in 1970, and then again in 1971 when Johnny Rodgers won the heisman. I remember watching Tom Osborne's first game as head coach against UCLA. My first game in Lincoln was in 1974 against Northwestern, a 48-7 win. The last game I saw in Lincoln was a long time ago, the 1978 Oklahoma game. Billy Sims fumbled inside the 3 yard line with about 3 minutes in the game and Huskers knocked off the #1 ranked Sooners for Tom Osbornes first career win against Oklahoma. That win likely saved his job, there were a lot of people that wanted to push him out due to losing 7 in a row to Oklahoma, sure glad he won that game!

Bellevue is where Offut is at, Air Force.  Belleville, Illinois is where Scott Air Base is, but my dad was in the army, and worked in St. Louis.

Yeah my mom is from lincoln, my dad is from York.  My dad's last position for the Army was head of the Army ROTC program at UNL.  I did my last three years of High School and the University in Lincoln.  I lived there for about 7 years, but visited there many times because all my other relatives lived in Nebraska.
