Netherlands Beats Dominican Republic 3-2 In Huge Upset At World Baseball Classic
David Just Beat Goliath In The First Round Of The WBC, As The Netherlands Defeated The Domincan Republic

Kenley Jensen, Sidney Ponson and Sharnol Adriana were the stars today for a relatively anonymous Netherlands team as they beat an All Star laden Dominican Republic powerhouse.

The Netherlands team has a roster full of players who are unknown to all but the most avid baseball geeks, but it was enough to get the win over the Dominican Republic. The DR team featured MLB players like Carlos Marmol, Edinson Volquez, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Robinson Cano, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Miguel Tejada and Willy Tavares, but it wasn't enough and the Netherlands won 3-2.

Catcher Kenley Jensen, who is a player in the Dodgers system, came up huge in the last inning, throwing out Tavares at third base trying to steal, resulting in the 2nd out in the 9th inning. That play was huge, as it would have put the tying run on 3rd base with only one out.

This game was an upset of epic proportions, considering the immense difference in talent between the two teams. Compare it to Appalachian State beating Michigan, the Miracle on Ice, and Villanova over Georgetown. It's that big of a deal.

Congrats to the Netherlands, who now are in great position in this double elimination round. The DR team now has to be very careful. They should still be in good shape, as they are the favorites in Pool D, but they still have to worry about Panama and Puerto Rico, and one more loss would send them right out of the tournament, after being one of the favorites heading in.

good for them! Proves once again that it is more important to play as a team than have the big guns

I said I wouldn't watch this crap, but even I tuned in to see this.  The Domican will probably still win the Bracket

Pat obviously you watched it, because the words you used are almost exact of the commentators...including the headline!

LOL... yeah, I did watch it. I'm a huge baseball junkie. And yes, I'm sure it sounds a lot like what the announcers said. To be fair, they took all the good examples of upsets, so I had to steal their examples there hahaha.

Most of it is just pretty simple though. Some dudes that no one has ever heard of just beat an All Star team.

so why did the jerseys say NEDERLANDS?  some language issue I assume

The upset isn't really that shocking when you think about it.  The DR just didn't take their "shots"  before the WBC...didn't want to draw suspicion

Yeah, gotta be the language. I don't know for sure, but I can't imagine any other possibility.

Nice managing, Felipe. Everyone just witnessed why Bonds never got a ring.

The man went senile a good 12 years ago. He's gonna have a heart attack one of these days on his way out to the mound to make a pitching change.

After observing the circumstances (three runs on infield hits, DR's awfulness with men on base, Sidney friggin Ponson), all I can conclude is: baseball is a unique game that can produce very strange results.

I'm betting Pat is one of those "most avid baseball geeks" who DOES know who the players for the Netherlands are.

I knew who Kingsale was because he was in the Orioles organization in the 90s. "Nederland" is Netherlands in Dutch.

Dutch (nl-Nederlands.ogg Nederlands ) is a West Germanic language spoken by over 22 million people as a native language,[1][2] and about 5 million people as a second language.[3] Most native speakers live in the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname, with smaller groups of speakers in parts of France, Germany and several former Dutch colonies. It is closely related to other West Germanic languages (e.g., English, West Frisian and German) and somewhat more remotely to the North Germanic languages.

Dutch is the parent language of several creole languages as well as of Afrikaans, one of the official languages of South Africa and the most widely understood in Namibia. Dutch and Afrikaans are to a very large extent mutually intelligible, although they have separate spelling standards and dictionaries and have separate language regulators. The Dutch Language Union coordinates actions of the Dutch, Flemish and Surinamese authorities in linguistic issues, language policy, language teaching and literature.[7]

Thanks Wiki!  It is the Dutch spelling of their country.

It seemed to me that at least half the team were players from the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean.  Aruba and such.

The game had so many chances for the DR to at least tie it, if not just take the lead/win. Willie Tavares on third in I think the 6th or 7th inning with Papi at the plate - pitch gets away, and Tavares freezes himself not being able to score. Two at-bats later, Tejada double play leaving Tavares there.

8th inning, Aybar walks with one out, Jose Reyes comes in to pinch-run. Everyone knows he wants to run, and with 1 out and down 1, Reyes has the legs, and should be going. Instead, Nelson Cruz pops it up to right, and Reyes is stuck on first with 2 out. Felipe then brings in Moises, who flys out lazily to left.

9th inning, leadoff walk for Taverez. Cano grounds out, and Tavarez goes to second. Again, 1 out and RISP, it should be easy for anyone in the DR lineup to bring him home. Instead, inexplicably, Felipe sends Tavarez to third and is gunned down pretty easy after not even that good of a jump. Hanley Ramirez will end up walking and instead of 1st and 2nd with 1 out, its Hanley on 1st with 2 out, and Bautista ends up striking out.

There were plenty of more times earlier in the game where the same dumb moves happened and just couldn't hit with RISP (ended up being around 1-12). It completely takes away from the fact that after the Netherlands 1st inning, they amassed 1 single...and that's it.

It's not that big of an upset when you realize that most of the players from The Netherlands team are actually  from The Netherlands-Antilles, which is near the Domican Republic, actually further south, near Venezuela.
