Rumors have surfaced that winning the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft would not be enough for Deron Williams to stay with the Brooklyn Nets. With the draft lottery taking place tonight, Nets fans were likely hoping to see their team win the first pick so they could pair Kentucky center Anthony Davis with Deron Williams, but apparently Williams doesn't think that's enough. Williams allegedly will opt out of his player option should the Nets not become an "instant Eastern Conference contender," and you've got to assume that Williams has his eyes set on Orlando Magic all-star center Dwight Howard. Rumors of Howard to the Nets have been popping up for about a year now, and it's been an immense pain for the Magic. Howard has become a huge distraction for a team that tanked towards the end of the season, prior to Howard requiring surgery on his back. After all the ridiculous drama with Howard during the trade deadline (which made the Carmelo Anthony situation look like a standard transaction), Howard eventually agreed to forego his early termination option, giving the Magic one more year to convince Howard to stay. The Magic were obviously thrilled, as they got the chance to sign a good free agent or find a difference maker in the draft to satisfy their franchise player. Now Howard is saying that he still wants a trade before the season starts, and that foregoing his early termination option was a mistake.
I'm really starting to get fed up with this guy. Just make up your mind, Dwight. He's acting like me when I was four years old in a candy store crying because I couldn't decide between a Twix and a Milky Way and my mom wouldn't let me get both. No one can play for two teams, and Dwight seems to want to stay where he's the man and have the fans adore him, but also head to a big market with other superstars and be a realistic contender. He's just gotta pick one and end this ridiculousness. Hopefully this pre-season trade demand is his final decision. If the Nets can make get the ball rolling on a deal before Deron Williams leaves, they have to be considered the front-runners to land Howard.
