Neville favors Liverpool over Man Utd for Champions League football next season
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has confirmed that Liverpool favorites for the fourth spot on the Premier League table. The former England international believes the Reds will edge out and acquire Champions League action next season. In a recent interview to Sky Sports, Neville foresee Liverpool to be “in pole position” to end the season at fourth position.
This means Manchester United will miss out on Champions League after 21 years. Manchester last missed out on coveted European competition back in 1995. Neville, who hung up his boots as a Manchester United player in 2011, believes the new Old Trafford boss David Moyes has put Manchester United’s sparkling record under threat of being blemished.
Neville feels Manchester United will be unable to better their form this season and Liverpool will take the final spot with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City being the other three teams that qualify for the Champions League.
“I think it will be between Liverpool and United for fourth place and I have to say that, at the moment, Liverpool are in pole position and look the strongest,” Neville said. “There are little fights going on everywhere.
“The relegation is incredible and we’ve never seen anything like it before, the top of the league is obviously tight and the Champions League spaces with Everton, Tottenham, United and Liverpool is fascinating as well.
“Liverpool were top of the league on Boxing Day and I think that there has been progression there this season, mainly through Luis Suarez’s form who has been incredible, but he is supported and aided by the rest of his teammates.”
A seven-point lead has opened up between Liverpool and seventh-placed Manchester United. Neville added that Manchester United still had a chance of acquiring Champions League, but they will need to make “big improvements” in order to change their fate.
Manchester United will have to fight with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur apart their archrivals Liverpool to acquire the fourth spot. Fifth-placed Everton and sixth-placed Tottenham have been breathing down Liverpool’s neck for the fourth spot.
Manchester United will probably have to win the rest of the games for the season in order to enter upper echelons of football. Some Manchester United players have already accepted next season’s Champions League football as a dream. However, little can be said on how Manchester United will play in the following days, especially with the return of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney and the signing of Juan Mata.
