New York Giants: Super Bowl XLII Champions

If only someone would have picked this upset. Oh right, I did. Thanks to the three of you that gave me a thumbs up. Three of you. Thanks.

More importantly, congratulations to the New York Giants for one of the greatest Super Bowl upsets of all time.

Fortuitously, I read the book "The GM" throughout the last month. It interested me because I've respected Ernie Accorsi as one of the best at his job, and admittedly always dreamed of becoming a general manager no matter how absurd that sounds. What was unique is that the book's final chapter ends with Accorsi greeting his Giants after their loss to Philadelphia last season.

His final statement: "There's a championship in this room, and I look forward to watching it."

After finishing the book I told some friends I believed every word of that statement. Giants 17, Patriots 14.

p.s. - I hope this ends the Eli vs Rex arguments.  Much more on the Super Bowl tomorrow.

And Tiki doesn't!

Amazing game.  Best Super Bowl I've ever seen.  Eli Manning was clutch.  The play that he somehow didn't get sacked still amazes me.  Congrats to the New York Giants on their championship.

Agreed, the most fun I've had watching a Super Bowl. Great game, great for the NFL. New England is still one of the best teams of all time, but proves how difficult it is to go through a full season without a loss.

Congrats! The good guys won. Tyree deserved the MVP, Feagles knows his role and I hope he can walk away now knowing what he accomplished.

Strahan, too. Although the scary part is he can still do some damage. It's a great team, and Ernie Accorsi deserves credit even though he's a year removed.

Not only Eli not getting sacked, but that 34 yard pass he made in the middle of all that was almost as amazing as the catch at the other end.

Fantastic game, and good call on the prediction.  I was talking to someone earlier today and was being a contrarian, justifying how I thought the Giants could win, but I certainly wouldn't have placed money on it.

This game is probably the 2nd-best SB I can remember.  Super Bowl XXV, Giants-Bills, with the missed FG by Norwood and all of the surrounding stuff (political and otherwise), is still my favorite SB that I've witnessed.  This year's is #2 and probably the Titans-Rams game is #3.

Again, another thread without a Patriot fan. Before this game on every single football thread THEY WERE EVERYWHERE!

I think the Boston area realizes that they are going to get hell the next few days.

You know what's amazing that I hope all of us realize, regardless of which team we are fans of.

NEVER in our lives again, will brothers win back to back championships in any sport.

That's pretty awesome. And I'm not necessarily a fan of either of them.

What'd he say now? No matter what he says, this Patriots team was better than the '72 Dolphins.  Heck, I'd take this Giants team over the '72 Dolphins.  Had Terry Bradshaw not have a concussion in the first quarter of their playoff game, odds are they wouldn't have even won their Super Bowl.

congrats to Eli and his Giants. They seem to be the only team moving the ball. Go the Pats for 2008/2009! 18-1!! woooohoooo

Yeah I was thinking about that when I seen Peyton Manning pumped up when Eli threw that final TD. Thats pretty amazing.

Good night for Peyton as well.

He got to see his brother win MVP of the Superbowl, and got to see him do it against the Patriots and Tom Brady (Peyton's Rival)

Good Luck having a season like that again. Thats pretty rare. Im all happy that the Patriots lost, but I admit, I feel for the fans and the players of the New England Patriots. I cant imagine how it feels.

It feels awful but the writing was on the wall at half time when the margin was small and in the 4th quarter when they tried to engineer a win with the clock in the last minutes. Giving NY 3 mins to work magic? The way Manning had gone up the field was there any doubt? Other teams have faltered at the last hurdle - but the (wild card) Giants will remain the David that beat the (all conquering) Goliath aka the Patriots.  History will sing the Giants praises as the lil' team that could. All power to them for next season.

Agreed, I think Randy Moss tries his trade elsewhere which makes Tom Brady fairly average.

Way too early prediction: Colts over Vikings

Yeah. IMO Tom Brady is a average Quarterback no matter what. Tonight, the ONE game he gets pressured like every other quarterback in the NFL, he proves he isnt so "great".

Sean Salisbury just said he would walk from Birstol to the Super Bowl next year if the Pats don't make the Playoffs next year. Who else is now really rooting for the Pats to miss the playoffs?

Oh it wasn't doubt - I picked the Giants to win too. I was a little scared was all, and  I just didn't know for sure if they almost beat "THE" Pats in week 17 or the backups. I have a tendency to not want to predict something out loud that I want to happen. It hasn't worked well for me in the past.

SUCH a good book though - I recommend it to anyone in love with the game and intrigued by the inner workings of a team.

That's where I picked 'em. I would have been scared to put money down. There's a thin line between hope and faith.

no, sadly the NFL decided to replay the last 2 minutes of the game on some kind of technicality and given a 2nd chance, Eli was stopped.    Pats won 14-10.

kraft and the commish were seen sneaking off together into some back room shortly after the 4th down pass was batted down.

sorry.

By all means I can't stand either team. I had to work last night, but luckily I can watch TV every once-in-a-while. When I saw the score at 10-7, I couldn't back away from the TV.

I will not say this is the best game I have ever seen because I only watched the first and fourth quarters. But, I will say that this game had the best fourth quarter I have ever seen.

Sorry it took so long... way too intoxicated to type or come up with complete sentences last night.  Congrats to the Giants.  They didn't give Brady anytime to throw, and Eli played great.  Only mistake wasn't really his fault when Smith tipped the ball into Hobbs arms.  Unbelievable catch by Tyree, still watching replay after replay, I can't believe he held on to that ball trapped against his helmet with Harrison arm in there.  Or that Eli got away for that matter, to get the ball off.  This loss will sting for a while.

Get your shots in now... my Patriots will be back in September for another run at the title.  I am sure the Patriots are already thinking of ways to improve upon this season, which won't be easy.  Anyone got Chad Johnson's number?

I wonder if Bill Simmons has slipped into some kind of trauma induced coma.

I would have agreed with you had the Patriots won, but I think Moss stays to try winning his ring.  Of course, who knows what Moss is thinking.  He may just be happy with the records, and says screw the rings.  Of course, my nightmare situation would be... Marvin Harrison retires... Colts sign Randy Moss.

Brady... fairly average?  I hate to ask but what does it take for you to consider a QB above average?

Oh, and my early prediction...  Patriots over Saints.

That was one of the best Super Bowls. The scoring wasn't there but man the defense made up for with big hit after big hit.

When the Giants scored to go up 17-14 all I could think about was the Burress prediction. I thought the Patriots were going to get a FG to go to OT and then the Giants score a TD to win 23-17 but the Pats couldn't live up to the expectations.

The play of the Super Bowl was Eli "Rubber Band Man"ning and David Tyree's new football shaped helmet decal.

I picked the right side of history to cheer for.

Two Super Bowl Rings for two QB brothers in two years - almost impossible

Two Super Bowl MVPs by those same two brothers - crazy talk by a man in a padded cell.

Two brothers getting to rub into their dads nose they have one and he doesn't = Priceless

The most amazing factor in the whole thing was that the Giants- D held New England to Two touchdown scores all game and to hear every sportscaster say that the Patriots were going to blow them away just go to show the craziness  that the G-MAN had to deal with for two weeks. Give me two weeks to sit and boil I would've done the same thing. GO G-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
