New York Mets: Extending David Wright's Contract is a Smart Move

New York Mets' third baseman David Wright reportedly will get his wish: finishing his All-Star career with the team that brought him onto the MLB.

Wright, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, is on his way to the Big Apple to take a physical for the organization, possibly completing the process of an eight-year contract extension worth $138 million. 
 
The deal is expected to be finalized during the Winter Meetings next week in Nashville, Tennessee, according to the report. 
 
Wright has produced above all other top-tier prospects in the Mets' organization, leading the way with a career .301 average, 818 RBI and 1426 hits in his eight years. He also has shown a decent glove at third base, holding a .953 fielding percentage with three Gold Gloves and six All-Star appearances.

However, none of those stats compare to how much Wright is worth to the franchise as...well...the franchise.  
 
Think of it this way: When someone mentions "The New York Mets." even non-MLB or Mets' fans most likely picture David Wright. Without question, he certainly has made their fourth-place finishes the past few seasons more tolerable.
 
It's makes the deal a smart move for both, GM Sandy Alderson and Wright, himself. After all, while there are other needs for the Mets now and for the future, keeping the franchise-face in good standing is also an important factor for a teams' success—Or, fiscally speaking, at least giving the future ticket sales a positive boost.  
 
And the Mets have accomplished all of that, finally giving their fan base something to be excited about—other than the joys of the knuckle ball or "Mike Piazza Day," assuming there is such a fiesta.
