New York Yankees Are Hurting Baseball With Their Free Agency Spree
The New York Yankees Take The Fun Out Of Baseball
I will admit that I am not fond of the Yankees, but am not into being a Yankee hater. It is mostly that I find their way of remaining at or near the top of the baseball world very distasteful and almost feel like they are cheaters.

Yes, I have heard it all before that any team can buy their own players and win a trip to the World Series, however this simply isn't true. The Yankees have the money to spend while other smaller market teams don't. Or if a team at least has some money to go after free agents, one bad signing can kill them, whereas the Yankees can simply spend even more to neutralize the damage.

I have always believed in grooming your farm system and having home grown talent develop along with your veterans to lead the way. Trades are an acceptable means as well of attaining players to fill the needs of a team, but this off-season has really made me sick with the way the Yankees are spending outlandish amounts of money to buy up such great stars as Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Brunett and maybe even Manny Ramirez. It's like the upcoming season is already written.

The Brewers lost their best pitcher in C.C., who performed magic for them. Meanwhile the Angels lost their best offensive player, and so on and so forth. It's simply too much.

I can only say that I will be rooting for any team that plays against the Yankees this year because I don't believe in buying your way into the World Series, and if it wasn't for teams like the Yankees and Red Sox - who spend mostly to keep up with New York - these ballplayers wouldn't be dictating the insane amount of money they are getting and would also force Scott Boras back into his little hole in the ground.

I actually have more respect than ever for Arte Moreno and the Angels when they withdrew their offer for Teixiera saying Boras was using them just to drive up the price. The Angels also didn't bother to try to keep Frankie Rodriguez because he wanted the moon. So teams like the Angels will play with who they have and give younger players a chance.....the way it should be.

EXCELLENT blog Riley!  It does seem this off-season has been a little more ridiculous than others, doesn't it?  I, for one, can only hope that it backfires on them.  With teams being forced to use an entire team, rather than depending on one player to "lead the way", it may just be that the "entire team" will shine. I'm ready for one of those "magical seasons" when the sports writers write about the entire team, not just one or two great players.  I don't think I've seen one of those seasons in a while, so maybe we are due.  In the meantime, the Yankees are grabbing all kinds of leaders, but that only brings out the question, if they are all gonna lead, who's gonna follow?

It will back fire! Sabathia by the second time around the League will pitch just like he did in Cleveland. The paid him by the pound.   A.J will win more games than him. And good comment JrCanuckFan.... who is going to follow?

Great job Riley!  I too am astonished at what the Yankees will do to get to the point they *think* they have a sure winning expensive team!  What if they all play like a bunch of disjointed pieces instead of a team.  You're buying alot of egos there too!  I like the farm teams, and love it when the Padres bring up some young new talent!   I think this year with the Towers' divorce, we may be seeing quite a few young and upcoming players!  OUR year next year should definitely improve over THIS one!  That's if we still have bats and stuff when he's done!

fantastic blog write up Riley, what the Yankees have done this off season is sicking and i am sure that most of us who are not fans of them will all be watching and hoping these moves fail and teach them that money cannot buy everything, alas i don't think they will learn that lesson anytime too soon

I don't know if they got Manny Ramirez yet, but I think with all their big name Players they will find the going tough in their own division, Tampa bay is still there, and Boston will still be tough.

Keep in mind that those two players you mentioned, CC and Teixeira, were on OTHER teams before they landed in California and Milwaukee.

I guess I see it differently than you.  Is it ok to post a link to my blog that takes the opposite position as your take?   http://cooler-heads.blogspot.com/

I could not agree more.  I was very pleased with the Angels for not playing the high roller game.  Salaries such as these players are demanding drive up ticket prices and make it harder for the average family to go to a game.  With the economy in a recession keeping the price of tickets down will be more important than ever.  Besides I love watching a team play as a team not a  bunch or prima donnas playing for themselves.

i am a yankees fan , and yes i might have to agree with you, but lets put it in more perspective shall we, in all major sports we are going to see the elimination of the smaller market teams, simply put capital ! you look at the larger teams in sports today that have their own cable and large fan base , greed will always rule, cap spending  ? give me a break , it is just the slow death of a small market, with the cap limit increasing every year, will soon be the death of them. even if you gave mlb a cap limit , which they call a luxury tax, cmon their cable revenues will pay that with room to spare!  now you got the yankees with 2,500$ seats , add that up over 162 games and you get just under a half million for one seat for a season and you wonder where the yanks are getting the money for c.c. , a.j. , m.t. , its the upper middle class , that will dole out the money , buts lets not confine this to the yankees, its happening in all major sports, the yankees just seem  to do it the most .
No... Everyone else has a cap.  The cap does go up, but it does up as the Leagues do better.  Such a move does NOT keep the low revenue teams down.  It actually allows for low revenue teams to do well.  The MLB luxury tax is no cap limit.  It isn't even an impediment to overspending.

This is not happening in every sport.  Only in MLB.  The one sport without a cap.

I think it is more like Arte WAS acting like Yankees west for a while, but discovered even he, in the LA market couldn't keep that up.

But, that comment wasn't an opinion.  It was a theory on why Arte was cutting back on his player payroll.

And opinion would be something like, "When Arte bought the Angels, I did not like it when he treated them like the west coast office of the Yankees."

Yet it is indeed a fact that he DID throw a lot of money at players when he bought the team.

You can't throw money at someone if you don't have the money in the first place.
