Well, Tonight being sans children, I headed out to the COP Climbing wall. (Columbus Outdoor Pursuits) Its located in the back of a field, nestled into some trees in southwest Licking County. If you didnt know it was there, you would never notice it. Its this structure the group built back in the late 90's, they have a generator in the winter for heat and lighting, but in the summer, the outside walls are used for climbing too. I had gone last week (its only open on Wednesday nights), and the leader was very patient with me, and really encouraging me. Well tonight she really pushed me to try the overhang wall. Mind you I have only been climbing um, like, less than two weeks- and the thought of doing that, well, quite frankly terrified me. She said, "you should try purple or orange to get up that section-" I said, "you really think so? That I could do that?" And figuring she was the expert, I tried it. First time I got kind of twisted around, and had to start again, but the second time I made it up all the way to the top of the wall. I played it cool, but I was rather excited to be able to do something a month ago I would have said no way could I do it.The best part was just hanging from one arm, and being able to swing myself into position- that was great fun.
Some of the "kids," well they aren't kids, but I feel old around them, are Denison students. Most of them know my dad-since he coaches pole vault there. One of these guys, is just amazing to watch- he is like a freaking monkey. He managed to get up one of the walls- with only using one hand. So another guy challenged him to do the overhang wall blindfolded. And he did. Don't expect to see me doing either of those things - any time soon, or more likely- never.
Oh, and here is a picture of the wall I managed to climb- but that isn't me, I just pulled it off their website...
