Nicklas Lidstrom Injures "Knee," Classic Avs-Red Wings Fights Ensue

The number one sign it's a little slow in the sports world: I start writing about hockey acknowledge a hockey game was played.

It might not be what it once was during the 90s, but the Avalanche and Red Wings still like to get at it. Last night's game was no different.

Now I know NHL players have a lot of pride, but watch this clip and tell me if you think the Wings Nicklas Lidstrom injures his "knee," as was reported to the media after the game. Uh-huh.

I'll play that game. Aaron Downey then took umbrage with the hit and went after Ian Laperrierre's knee multiple times ... heck even the coaches went after each other's knees.

I should also mention the Red Wings won 4-0. Yeah, hockey.

This rivalry isn't what it once was, but there are some now that compare. Unfortunately the broadcasting of hockey here in the US makes it almost impossible to follow anyone but local teams; even then, it's a crap shoot. I'm looking forward to watching the Wild/Canucks game tonight - I'm sure there will be a huge fight, hit, injury, or SOMETHING worth blogging about in that game; there usually is. Alas, it's nowhere to be seen or heard unless you have a hockey package

There's remnants of disdain but both teams are less physical than they used to be.  There are still instigators like Draper and Holmstrom on the Wings, and Laperriere for the Avs would fight his own grandma.  Nothing too brutal anymore, though.  No goalie fights, for one.

Oh Lappy and his bent nose. I miss him wearing purple and black. He's a good dude, but on the ice you do not want to turn your back on him.
