Nightly Q: How Many Times Did Kelvin Sampson Call Robbie Hummel?

Nightly Q: How Many Times Did Kelvin Sampson Call Robbie Hummel? PhotoThere's not a lot going on tonight. Purdue/Indiana is literally about it, unless you want to watch the Tour of California late this evening. But that Purdue/Indiana game should be fun to watch, since it's likely going to be Sampson's last game. Also interesting is that Purdue player Robbie Hummel had his name surface in the NCAA Enforcement letter of inquiry as an alleged target for some of the Hoosiers' impermissible phone calls.

I don't think that'll translate into much on the court, but at least it sounds cool. And that's good enough for me.

College men's basketball:  Purdue at Indiana (ESPN, 7 p.m.); N.C.-Greensboro at Davidson (ESPN2, 7 p.m.); Georgia at Kentucky ESPN, 9 p.m.)

Cycling:  Tour of California, stage 2, Santa Rosa to Sacramento (Versus, 11 p.m., same-day tape)

NHL:  Chicago at St. Louis (Versus, 8 p.m.)

Soccer:  UEFA Champions League, second round, first leg, Inter Milan at Liverpool (ESPN2, 2:30 p.m.); Real Madrid at AS Roma at Rome (ESPN Classic, 5 p.m., same-day tape)

What's really scary for the rest of Big Ten fans is that this whole group of Purdue players will all be together for at least another two years.

I'd like to think that the Big Ten will be getting much better as well though.  The fact that Wisconsin is sitting in 2nd with this roster doesn't say much for the conference.  Then again, college basketball around the nation is down.

I don't know if it's down, so much as kids that would normally be content with being the 10th man at the elite schools are going to a tier lower and starting.

I actually think Michigan State will be better next year without Neitzel. Not that he's not good, but he's gotten max out of his abilities. The current three frosh + Raymar will run the shoe along with a incoming frosh (#4 recruit in the country) who can actually score in the post.

Beilein and Tubby should have some decent teams in a few years, as well.

I agree with your thoughts on Michigan State.  Tubby scares me.  Wisconsin has been able to take all of Minnesota's top talent the past few years but that'll be changing soon.  The coaches in the Big Ten are very good, they just need to find the talent.

I sort of agree with the idea of players going to lower tiers.  Its just that theres no great teams.  Even Kansas and Memphis are beatable.  Duke, with Greg Paulus at point, is one of the top teams.  I just feel that if we had these teams player just a few years back that they would be getting slaughtered.

Anyone else heard of Musenberger's rumor of Caron Butler going to the Lakers?  How the hell could we pull that off?

I saw a little deal of Yahoo! about that rumor ... but the consensus was how the hell do they pull it off.

I mean what could they offer?

I can't speak for the other teams, but Izzo is starting to incorporate more 'movement' into this offense in practice ... more of the Duke style of play. Spartans get way to structured at times. Izzo should've been a football coach. So hopefully we can see an improved "style" of play in a few years.

No idea why Washington would do it, but a package like Ariza, Radmanovic and a 1st would get it done.  I doubt Washington takes on Radman's bad contract though.  Ariza's contract is up at years end.  The Lakers are obviously ok with further mortgaging the future to win it all this year.  Should have never let Butler go.

+1 thumbs upOutside of Odom, whos the perfect 3rd/4th option for this team, nothing much.  Renegade put together about the only other offer I could think of, and thats pretty crappy.  If I'm the Wizards, I'm trading Gil before Butler.

Shaq's going to start?

How many minutes do you think he plays tomorrow night? I'll take 20.

I'll take the over on that. I bet he gets about 26 minutes, 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. 3-11 from the line.

That might be generous.  It'd be stupid to play him more than 30 period until the playoffs start.  15-18 for a few games.  Although they'll be eager to prove he's in shape, so who the hell knows.  Hope they run him into the ground.

I do like that Phoenix's style of basketball is starting to come down to the college level.  Its only a matter of time until high school's start running it too.  That said, it continues to amaze me that a 3 point shooting team who plays tough-nose man-to-man defense even when they're thoroughly outmatched athletically can constantly have significantly less fouls than their opponents ( I can't talk about Duke for much longer than a couple of sentences without ripping them.)

As for Shaq... he might play quite a bit because the Lakers have always liked slowing it down against the Suns. Plus, something tells me he might be a little extra motivated for this game.

Run 'n' Gun gets the crowd pumped, but it'll get swallowed up by good defense and timely perimeter shooting 10 times out of 10.

+1 thumbs upI'd disagree. Run n' gun was one questionable suspension away from winning the NBA title last year.  Keep Shawn Marion on the Suns and give then Sean Williams and you have the best team in the league hands down.  If the Suns simply would've actually used their first round picks the past few years they'd be the best team IMO.

And they still might be the best team even without using those picks.

+1 thumbs upDePaul is leading UCONN by 7 with about 8 to go.  Considering the way UCONN has played lately that'd be a pretty big upset.

Spilled milk.  And the team that benefited from the 'questionable call' was the Spurs, and it's been all Spurs and Pistons for a while now.  It may change eventually, but I hope not.  And this is coming from a fan of a team that lives and dies with the fast break.  It's a horrible way to play, let alone teach kids.

For those wondering, McCain won Wisconsin with ease.  Obama is leading right now.  I'm afraid for Obama.  I've heard far too many moronic Republicans (I'm not bashing them as a party) say they'll vote for Clinton just so McCain has a chance in November.  Okay... now CNN is saying Obama won.

Feel free to bash them as a party.  They're all morons.  Except Chachi.  He's just slow.

Hilary's speech so far : "I need money."

Might I add that Roe was stolen from Carolina. It led to Zeller's recruitment anyway and the guy can't stop scoring 40+.

Next year will probably not be another year of the freshman unlike the last two seasons. Sure there are a few uber-talents like Monroe, just not depth like this year or even last year if you check what some sophomores are doing. I am actually excited that the Naismith probably won't include a freshman in the conversation and that Tyler can be a back to back winner.
