Kevin Porter of the Michigan Wolverines won the Hobey Baker Award in a bittersweet weekend. Being awarded the best player in College hockey is truly an honor but can also mean nothing if a National Title does not follow. For Porter and the Wolverines, that scenario has come true.
The #4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish knocked off the #1 Michigan Wolverines 5-4 in overtime to advance to the Title game. Notre Dame scored three first period goals, only to see Michigan come back midway through the third to tie the game. After Notre Dame went ahead 4-3, Michigan tied the game once again to send it to overtime, where Calle Ridderwall scored the game winning goal. It is the Irish’s first ever trip to the National title game and they are the first #4 seed to ever reach it as well.
Facing off against Notre Dame is the #2 Boston College Eagles. Boston College knocked off North Dakota 6-1 in a highflying game where UND pretty much did not show up. Nathan Gerbe of BC netted a hat trick in the second period and Boston College kept rolling from there. This is the third year in a row that Boston College knocked off North Dakota in the Frozen Four, but they lost the previous two national championship games. Third time’s a charm?2008 NCAA Men’s Division I Hockey National Title Game
