After a long season of notably muddy games in the Steel City Heinz Field will remain a natural grass surface. This will be the same DD GrassMaster surface that Philadelphia and Green Bay currently use.
The players seemed to have the decision on this one. Many of the Steeler players enjoy playing in a mud pit, and many of the fans enjoy watching them play in it; I know I do. It backs the nature of the city of Pittsburgh. A hard working, honest town that isn't afraid to get there hands dirty.
I have been confronted by many people saying the Steelers have, "The worst grounds crew in the NFL." Many people still do not know that probably a dozen high school football games are played on it and that the University of Pittsburgh plays there home games at Heinz. Hey, the grounds crew does the best they can amidst all the havoc of the dips and ruts on the field, even though I do not know how much the kitty litter helps...
This can go both ways on me. I enjoy the 'mudder lifestyle' of the Steelers players and I feel we play well in it, despite a 3-0 victory over a one win Miami team in November. Hey, a wins a win. But another part of me does not like the marsh that is Heinz Field. Twisted ankles, sprained knees, and Willie Parker rubber sleeve induced fumbles are just some of the words that come to mind. I do not want to be at a disadvantage at our own home field just because of the weather.
Until next time, this is Guysogum, over and out!
