The school held a press conference on Sunday to introduce Doeren into the program.
"It seemed like a place that was very close to getting to the next step," Doeren said. "I feel like I can make a difference here. That was the one thing I wanted to be able to do."
Doeren decided to leave Northern Illinois just one day after the Huskies beat Kent State in double-overtime for their second straight Mid-American Conference Championship.
In just two seasons, he compiled a 23-4 record (17-1 MAC) and leaves NIU with a No. 16 ranking in the latest AP Poll, despite the chance to play in a BCS bowl.
N.C. State fired former coach Tom O’Brien last week after six seasons on the job, who went 40-25 in his tenure. The Wolf Pack finished with a disappointing 7-5 (4-4 ACC) record in a year that held a lot of preseason hype.
Doeren might be the guy to finally get them over the hump.
