Update: Northern Illinois Senior LB Granted Release
The Sports Xchange reports that 25-year-old Freddy E. Sparks-Ward was the alleged culprit, who was charged with armed violence, aggravated battery, battery and criminal trespass with a maximum sentence of 30 years in jail.
Butler and Ward were involved in an altercation at an on-campus party and the stabbing was a direct response.
Butler, a senior, was able to work out with his team on Monday following the incident.
This isn't the first time Butler has experienced a close call with dangerous weapons: he was shot in early 2011 after a drug deal went wrong, forcing him to miss the entire season.
UPDATE: As of late Wednesday afternoon, Northern Illinois has granted Butler release from the team, reports Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports.
“Devon has not lived up to the standards we set for members of the Northern Illinois football team,” said coach Dave Doeren in a statement. “At this time, we feel it is in the best interest of both Devon and of our football program for him to make a fresh start at another institution.”
