I have to be honest, I don't like Charlie Weis very much. But last week, when Weis got his knee blown up by one of his own players, I did feel bad for him. But guys who are huge jackasses, like Weis is, have a tendency to easily make you hate them again almost immediately. And naturally, Weis accomplished this.
Yesterday while Michigan State was running over Notre Dame, the Irish accused of cheating by bringing a laptop into the coaches box, something that isn't allowed. I know what you're thinking, Charlie Weis, who spent years with the Spygate Patriots, might have been cheating? I'm shocked.
Michigan State spokesman John Lewandowski said the school asked a liaison to the officials to remove the laptop after noticing one being used by the Fighting Irish. The liaison took the laptop out of the their coaching box during a break in the first half.
“The first thought you have is, `Are they tracking tendencies or other data,”’ Lewandowski said. “You cannot use that type of resource in the coaching box. That’s just like you can’t have a replay monitor.”
Of course Weis said the laptop being in the coaches box was a mistake.
Weis said the officials approached him about the laptop and then he asked offensive coordinator Mike Haywood about it.
“I asked upstairs if there was one,” Weis recalled. “I was talking to Michael and he said, `No.’ Then, I guess one of the interns had one over there. Then I immediately told (the officials) that there was an intern (with a laptop) and he took it off a ledge and put it on the floor.”
The "intern did it" excuse is always a great way to deflect blame. We might even get an answer like that for the current financial crisis the country's in - which would please me to no end.
Now, all of this may indeed be just an accident. But considering how detail-oriented Weis is, and looking into his past with the Patriots, it's tough to give him the benefit of the doubt. It's also not crazy to imagine that Weis and his less than amazing Irish team are looking for whatever edge they can possibly get.
Either way, I'm not even sure cheating matters. This Notre Dame team doesn't stink as bad as last year's team, but they're nothing beyond mediocre at best. And no laptop is going to change that.
Laptopgate? Notre Dame insists it wasn't cheating. [Yahoo! Sports]
