Splash some water on your face. Take an ice cold shower. Rub your eyes vigorously. Nothing is going to change the fact that Notre Dame is a top-five team for the first time in six years.Blog Photo - Notre Dame Football: Irish 6-0 for First Time Since 2002

The Fighting Irish are 6-0 after their impressive overtime win over Stanford, giving them their third win over a ranked opponent on the season. It is also the first time they have started undefeated through six games since 2002.

Coach Brian Kelly has done a tremendous job turning around this program and is overachieving in a year where many — including myself — thought inexperience and a difficult schedule would be its downfall. But the Irish have taken advantage of this in a big way and have made a strong case for the BCS rankings.

In this week’s AP Top 25 poll, the Irish were placed fifth behind Alabama, Oregon, Florida and Kansas State, in that order. The FanIQ rankings have them at No. 4.

Notre Dame still has two huge road trips to Oklahoma and USC before season's end, with challenging matchups with BYU and Pittsburgh in the process.

If by some miracle the Irish come away without a regular season loss, there will be no argument against a national championship berth — the team's first since 1988 under Lou Holtz.
