Notre Dame sophomore center Nick Martin injured his knee during Saturday's hard-fought win over BYU and is assumed to be shut down for the remainder of the season. Blog Photo - Notre Dame football: Irish lose starting C for rest of season

Coach Brian Kelly called the incident a "significant" injury, reports Matt Fortuna of ESPN.com.

"We're still getting a little bit more information," Kelly said during his weekly teleconference. "We had an MRI. I'll probably have a little bit more specific details, but he's out for the season."

Martin isn't the first offensive linemen to be knocked out of the game long-term this year. Right guard Christian Lombard had a season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back in late October.

As a first-year starter, Martin was quarterback Tommy Rees' center for all 11 games this season. Co-sophomore Matt Hegarty replaced him when he went down and did a satisfactory job, but will have to be up-to-speed for this week's matchup at defensive-heavy Stanford.
