Novak Djokovic marches on for US Open glory – Serb defeats del Porto to enter semifinals
There was no stopping the Serb from advancing to his sixth straight semifinal at the US Open on Thursday evening. The world number two Novak Djokovic defeated the 2009 winner Juan Martin del Porto 6-2, 7-6(3) and 6-4 to enter the semifinal stage of the US Open.
Nonetheless, Juan Martin del Porto did make Novak Djokovic sweat for it. Both men ran around the baseline throughout the game with powerful forehands being exchanged on every other serve.
“Even though it was a three-set win, it was much closer than the score indicated,” Novak Djokovic said in an interview after his victory. “He is a great player. I was lucky to get out of the second set with a two-set advantage. It’s always entertaining playing in these night sessions. I’m very happy to be in the semi-finals.”
Juan Martin del Porto made a slow start to the game. The Argentine dropped the serve twice in the first set but made a comeback in the second by winning the first 10 points. The world number seven served at 5-4 with a streak of stunning shots. However, he was unable to close.
All of a sudden the game intensified. Novak Djokovic pulled up sleeves to bring the game to 5-6. The 23-year-old Argentine fought tooth and nail through three set points to claim victory in a 17-minute game of force tie-break.
However, Novak Djokovic made a late comeback to take away the last games and hence a two set lead over Juan Martin del Porto.
Novak Djokovic broke Juan Martin del Porto in the beginning of the third set to grab a hard-earned victory in three hours and five minutes. Novak Djokovic recorded 43 winners and 28 forced errors at the end of the game.
Novak Djokovic is now on joint second place for the most consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearances. The Serb is standing on the record with Rod Laver and Ivan Lendl at 10 appearances.
Novak Djokovic is trying to win his sixth major trophy this season. The 25-year-old’s last Grand Slam victory came against Rafael Nadal at the Australian open. Novak Djokovic also reached final of Roland Garros (the French Open), but Rafael Nadal exacted his revenge upon the Serb. Novak Djokovic also entered the Wimbledon semifinal where he was defeated by the Swiss maestro Roger Federer.
