Life is not fair if you're a Houstonian, the deck is stacked against us and the Sports Gods are frowning upon us. No matter which cliché you choose the fact of the matter is they're all true.
The first and most ridiculous reason Houstonians feel this way is because of the National League Central Division. Six teams are in this division. Six! Being one of the four teams in the AL West must be real nice. I understand that having 15 teams in each league would create a scheduling nightmare. With the configuration of the divisions the way they are makes it all that much harder for the expansion team Astros to become a constant playoff contender.
The second reason is because the Texans belong to the AFC South. Last year the AFC South was unquestionably the best division in football with both wild cards coming from this division and no teams with a losing record. In 2006 the AFC South was the second best division by record. In 2005, it was the only division with at least two teams with 12 wins. Now in 2008, in their seventh season, the division hasn't eased up at all, the only undefeated team in the NFL hails from the AFC South.
Lastly, the Houston Rockets are in undeniably the toughest division in the NBA. The SouthWest division had four teams in the playoffs last year. The year before, 2006-2007, the top three teams in the division each had at least 52 wins. In 2005-2006 two teams had 60+ wins.
Houston has the unfortunate reality to deal with all three of these reasons.
For all the Houstonians who complain about the lack of consistent success from our professional franchises, now you know the reasons. Is it fair? No.
