This should cheer up OJ Mayo.Mayo, who looked like he he'd just been told he was getting shipped off to Iraq when he was drafted by the Timberwolves, is instead heading to Memphis. Which, I guess in all honesty, isn't really that much better (than Minnesota, not Iraq). It's just slightly warmer.
Mayo is part of an 8 player megadeal that will see Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner sent to the Grizzlies in exchange for Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins.
The deal is especially good from an economic standpoint for the T-Wolves, as they get rid of Jaric's horrible contract (three years, $21 million) and Walker's and Buckner's contracts are not guaranteed after this season. Kevin McHale also gets the player he wanted so badly in McHale II, by which I mean Love.
Of course, one wonders what Minnesota could even do with that cap space, seeing as no one in their right mind would want to play and/or live in that state.
But enough of my hatred for freezing weather. The deal means Mayo will be teamed up with Mike Conley to comprise one of the more dynamic young backcourts in the league. Combined with Rudy Gay, Darko, and Hakim Warrick this could be a fun young team to watch play, even if they only win 30 games. And hey, Adriana will be in town as well.
Meanwhile, Minnesota will get to pair Al Jefferson up with Love to comprise a fearsome front line. They'll also have Miller as a long range weapon. Only problem is they still have no point guard to get any of these guys the ball, unless you for some reason consider Sebastian Telfair and Randy Foye to be capable point guards (I don't). Hopefully that's where they'll spend some of their newly acquired cap money.
This deal I actually think can help both teams. Even more bizarre, I actually think Minnesota, if they can just get their hands on a decent point guard, may have actually gotten the better deal in the long run. I also can't believe I just said I thought McHale did something smart for once.
But I better be careful. Knowing McHale's ability to torpedo any halfway decent situation, odds are he uses the money to coax Terrell Brandon out of retirement. Or he just burns it. Neither scenario would surprise me.
