I still remember 13 years ago when the OJ Simpson verdict was read. We actually had it broadcast over the school loudspeaker. It was a rather weird experience to say the least.
And while OJ's murder case taught us that if you have enough money you can buy your innocence (legally speaking), plenty of people have wanted to see him get put away.
Well, today that happened.
13 years to the day of OJ's acquittal in the murder case, he's been convicted by a jury of armed robbery and kidnapping of sports memorabilia dealers in a Vegas casino hotel which happened last year. Simpson was convicted on all 12 counts for which he was charged. .
Now here's the interesting thing. OJ potentially faces life in prison for this. Sentencing begins on December 5th.
Obviously, one of the big problems about this case was being able to find 12 jurors who knew nothing about OJ's past, which is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
"I don't like to use the word payback," defense attorney Yale Galanter said. "I can tell you from the beginning my biggest concern ... was whether or not the jury would be able to separate their very strong feelings about Mr. Simpson and judge him fairly and honestly."
Obviously, this case is going to get appealed, likely on the grounds that the jury wasn't impartial. Although if they have to redo this case, they might have to fly in people from a foreign country to be on the jury.
Anyway, at least he's finally been convicted of something, even if it's not for what it should have been.
