First, congrats to the Oregon State Beavers for winning back-to-back College World Series and giving bloggers all the possible headlines they could every desire. Even the guys at the World Wide Leader must have enjoyed put Back-to-Back Beavers across the front page last night. I've decided that repeating in college baseball is a truly impressive feat (duh), far more than the Florida Gators winning back-to-back college basketball titles. Baseball is not exactly a predictable sport.
But unfortunately, the Oregon State Beavers have offered us more from the world of white athletes trying to rap. Admittedly, this O-State Baller makes Vincent Spadea looking even more douchey, but considering the Oregon State baseball program has had just 1 black player in 55 years, this seems a little silly.
O-State Ballaz! (Deadspin) BACK-TO-BACK TITLES STILL DOESN'T HAVE OSU IN BLACK (SbB)
Oh come on CF. How's your white boy rap go again ?? Quit hatin.
Good one, B.
This is the most coverage OSU can get anywhere in the media though... which apparently, is by discussing the lack of diversity in the program. Mountain... meet molehill. "Rapping" and other side stories aside, too bad the discussion isn't more about how the Beavs won back-to-back titles, and how awesome it is for our state!
Most of the college sports world can't stand the fact that a so called "cold weather" program beat all the sun belt programs AGAIN. I didn't see a whole lot of diversity on the UNC team, now that you mention it.

Most of the sports WORLD can't stand it. Just a few short days ago, the Anteaters of UC-Irvine, were everyone's CWS team-du-jour, discounting the Beavs at half-off of the regular price.
I'm no perpetual "OSU lover", but the media's cinderella made me want to wretch (just a little bit).

Same 'ol, same 'ol, from the haters, IMO.... :)
You guys are nut jobs. Relax a little. I just complemented the achievement of Oregon State, called it a far greater feat than what can be accomplished in other sports.
Then I made a necessary, sarcastic jab at a bunch of guys making a rap called O State Ballaz. O State Ballaz. If you don't think that's hilarious something is wrong.

I haven't heard anyone complaining about OSU winning. I think you're making this up. I think it's outstanding, back-to-back in college baseball is a phenomenal feat. As I said above, but apparently was glossed over.

No one's complained, Jason. It just doesn't seem like winning back-to-back titles is news to anyone else, but Oregonians. The video is funny, but it should be shown as such, and not tied into a diversity statement.
Also, I'm glad to see someone else is joining us in the discussion.

1) It's college baseball so it's not going to get the attention. You have to realize that.
2) Diversity statement is a fact you have to face. Pretty sad if you ask me. With success comes attention and more information about the program. That happens in any sport.
3) It's been stated often that OSU winning back to back has been a solid feat.
I just thought it was petty to find something to pick on, especially when diversity is an issue in many programs, and that is a different discussion for a different day. To tack it on to a "good job" statement was lame. That was my point. And, frankly, I didn't think Mitch Canham was any worse than any other rap I've heard.

Actually, I tacked on the diversity statement and led with the good job.
I think you guys have a chip on your shoulder about this and are taking it the wrong way. With success comes attention. Good and bad.

Not sure what you guys are looking for?
Sorry, but it seems like your original post gave mixed signals. All your points above are solid. NCAA Baseball is not NCAA football. And yes, back-to-back... I'll give you that too.
But one black player on a roster does not make a team diverse. Whites, Latinos, an Asian, a Black, and a Polynesian, which make up this roster, makes it pretty diverse. If I seem dismayed with the connection between the video and SbB's statement, then I apologize for being a nut job.

I'm just a little surprised by the serious reaction to the video and factual note about the black player. Which is a bit amusing considering they're calling themselves the O State Ballaz.
Pretty ripe situation to handle with jest. I guess what I'm wondering, is has there been some sort of racial attack on OSU before? It seems that way from your guys response.

Look again at the SbB link. Do they care about the video?
Again, the video was funny. I'm just not seeing the correlation between the two.
It's unfortunate that folks, like SbB, bring up a non-issue like this. Unfortunately, racism remains a hot-button issue. But Oregon is a blue state, and not filled with gun-toting hicks chasing other peoples out of town.
I think it's great that the Beavers won again. Absolutely outstanding. The rap was pretty funny, but i'm sure i would have spit some crazy stuff too if i had just won a national title.
I also think it's a backhanded compliment to say good job and then ridicule in the next sentence. And I don't think name calling is necessary. Unless we're nut jobs because we're over 30 and disagree with you.

Again, relax Isabel. I was being sarcastic. Clearly you two aren't nutjobs. Had I know this was a serious topic I wouldn't have addressed it at all. This is a blog, it's not meant to kiss every team's ass. I'm just going to drop this because apparently there's something deeper here that I didn't know about.
I was mocking the video and passing along a link that was relative with a heavy dose of sarcasm.

The East coast bias of sorts rears it's head in the baseball world. I personally like watching the college world series, but I don't think I've ever watched a college baseball game before super regionals. I often watch that tournament not caring who wins. I like you must not know something that goes on in the college baseball world. So if you're going to be sarcastic from now on perhaps you could use "quotation marks" or italics...

There's no joking in sports.
I actually am quite a big fan of all Oregon Sports. I grew up in Portland, watched most of the finals and was actively rooting for them to win.
When you see a group of college baseball players calling themselves O State Ballaz, you have to comment. I'd do the same if Michigan State's baseball wanted to be called M State Ballaz.

There's nothing "deeper" just frustration, IMO, Jason. All I'm saying is one thing has nothing to do with the other, in your blog post. That's all.
