Oklahoma Already Counting Their Chickens Before They Hatch
In a move that I would describe nicely as "utterly stupid beyond belief", a local Oklahoma TV news Web site has already decided to put the Seattle Supersonics down as one of their local teams. Perhaps even more hilarious is that when you click on the Supersonics logo, it gives you a recap of the Sonics' last game - while still referring to the team as the Seattle Supersonics.

Well, that was of nice of them. I'm glad they didn't put 'Oklahoma Gunslingers defeat Warriors' or whatever the hell they're going to call the team.

As far as I'm concerned, this team is going to fail miserably in Oklahoma City, and while there are totally rational reasons for that - no pro athlete would ever want to live there, it's not a basketball state, the Hornets were a novelty while they were there and not a true indication of the kind of fanbase the team will have - there's also a much more simple reason.

And that's karma.

Everything about this now inevitable move has been shady beyond belief, from Clay Bennet lying to David Stern about exhausting all options in Seattle before moving the team, to Stern not caring that Bennet lied (and more or less working with him to move the team), to Stern basically ignoring Seattle's pleas to keep the team, to crap like an insignificant TV station jumping the gun and already calling the Sonics their team.

So fine Oklahoma, take the Sonics. Just don't be surprised when Kevin Durant bolts as soon as his contract expires and you eventually wind up with a team on par with the former Vancouver Grizzlies.

Then we'll really see how excited you are about having an NBA team.

This is going to be a disaster and I can't wait for Clay Bennet to go broke from this.

Oklahoma can't be any worse than the current Seattle fan base.

Not to ignore the subject at hand but, how are the Cardinals a local team and the Royals aren't?

Being in Oklahoma even I don't know the answer to that.

Every time I listen to a Cardinal broadcast, they mention affiliates in Oklahoma. Occasionally they mention some in other states, but not as frequently. My guess is that it is the closest team that can win some games. lol

i don't believe oklahoma is that bad of a basketball state....plenty of support for oklahoma and oklahama state's teams (men's and women's)

i know a lot of people here in kansas (especially here in wichita) are pumped to be able to see a game without driving 8+ hours or having to fly

Also on that site, there's a survey asking "When do you think the NBA Basketball will tip-off in Oklahoma City"

My guess is because of when KMOX had Cardinals games on the radio. KMOX had a very large area that could get its frequency.

Hrm... Maybe. But, I doubt it. I think there were just a bunch of affiliates. Like, when I was at my grandparents property, I'd get the game on some weird AM station. And that was only about 60 miles south of STL.

Ha!  I'm curious if you have ever been to Seattle to actually know that the city was apathetic about basketball.  Well, I can't say that I know anything about Oklahoma City, but growing up in the Seattle/Tacoma area myself I would have to say that the Northwest is very much interested in basketball.  I mean think about it, this is an area that gets about 9 months of rain, so basketball being an indoor sport has to be  something you are interested in, if you are into athletics at all.  I know plenty of Northwest fans where the Sonics have always been there team and they will definitely be missed.  It really sucks to be a Seattle fan right now.

OKC "Gunslingers"???  I like that!  Greatest team name in the old USFL (San Antonio Franchise).  No way the NBA management goes for that particular name change, but I got a feeling they could sell an awful lot of "Gunslingers" gear and lids in gangsta areas.  Immediately would be the hottest fashions in urban-wear and must-have items for all the little crips, bloods and vice-lords...
