He and Wesley Craves – who was also killed – were flying over South Bend, IN at the time of the crash.

“I'm saddened by the loss of Steve Davis,” tweeted Barry Switzer, who was Davis’ coach at Oklahoma. “Great role model for young people on & off the field. He was my 1st QB & had an outstanding career.”

Davis went 32-1-1 as the Sooners' starter from 1973 to 1975, starting every game of Switzer's first three seasons as head coach. Oklahoma tied USC in the second game of the ‘73 season before winning 28 straight with Davis under center.

Oklahoma won back-to-back national championships in 1974-75.
