Orange Bowl: Kansas Jayhawks vs Virginia Tech Hokies Live Thread

Are you ready for another night of the Blowout Championship Series?

I predicted a blowout in the first three (may have been just a bit off on who specifically in one of them) and I feel confident in a fourth straight tonight.

For starters, the best defense Kansas has faced all year is Missouri's which ranks 59th in the NCAA and should here in their place. Virginia Tech's is 5th and far more physical. I'd agree the Jayhawks defense is tough and while the Hokies offense isn't anything to be feared, it's effective at prodding yards after yards and wearing you down. Beamer Ball also has a huge edge in the punting game, so in typical Hokie fashion, I'd expect a few big plays in that area.

If Kansas wins it's because they've done the one thing they excel at unlike any team in the country -- don't turn the ball over. Plus their coach is awesome and might potentially eat Tyrod Taylor if given the choice.

78% says Va Tech

My Pick: Virginia Tech 34, Kansas 13

I honestly don't see Kansas having a chance to win this game. Va Tech might be the 2nd or 3rd best team in the country, while Kansas is only the 3rd best team in their own conference. Aside from Hawaii, Kansas played the weakest schedule of all BCS bowl teams, and weren't exactly dominant. Their only quality opponent was Mizzou, and the Tigers beat them pretty convincingly.

Depends, Kansas plays smart normally. The Mizzou game was the exception, where they looked skittish and gittery. If Kansas plays their game then it should be a good game.

Man what a punt return. That was beautiful. Justin Harper returned punt for 84 yards with the hand off from the teammate.  Virginia Tech is coming back. They have put up 14 now to be with in 3 at 17-14. Houston we have a game.

Even if VT wins this game, I feel vindicated for calling them overrated all year.  At no point this year did they ever look like a very good team.

In all seriousness, I wonder if a shock to the system like that would be the final blow to his heart?

Can someone get that man some help. For Kansas' sake, I'd like for them to have a great coach a few more years.

No kidding... I joke about Joe Pa dieing on the sideline (I know, its cruel), but if Mangino doesn't watch it he could do it.  He's a great coach and guy, and it'd be nice for him to be around.

How good does the Big 12 look right now?  Kansas won a BCS game, Mizzou destroyed Arkansas, and Texas beat up Arizona State.  Sure, Oklahoma crapped the bed last night, but West Virginia may be the best team in the nation.  Great year for the Big 12.
Coming from an OU fan, I am proud of the Big 12. OU winning would've made it better though.  But WVU probably has the best offense in the nation.

I didn't watch any of the game since I just got home, but congrats to Kansas.

I did see the trophy presentation though. Am I the only one who thinks filling the trophy with oranges is a little dumb? Did the Fiesta Bowl fill their trophy with tortilla chips? Did the Papajohns.com Bowl fill their trophy with tasty garlic dipping sauce?

That's tradition, they've always filled it up with oranges. I think it's kinda cool!

I never understood the "overrated" talk or that Kansas would get stomped in this game.
  • The ACC is really, really bad.  Their bowl performances and record this year and in the last few years speaks a ton about the quality of that conference.
  • Virginia Tech's biggest claim to supremacy was a win against a mediocre (at best) Boston College team.
  • Kansas was 12-1 against the spread.  That's incredible, and if anything, that means that Kansas was actually UNDERrated all season long.
  • People can talk all they want about the schedule, but Kansas blew out the bad teams and their close wins were against their rival (who was ranked) at their house, and wins at bowl teams aTm and Colorado.
  • The Big XII was pretty good this year, and KU's division (the North) actually won the head-to-head against the South this season.
It just seemed like, more than with other teams, people said that KU couldn't win because of going 11-1 against their crappy schedule, without even watching the games.  KU was the only team to be top-15 in offense and defense and committed the fewest penalties in the nation, while sporting a really impressive turnover ratio.  THOSE ARE SIGNS OF AN EXCELLENT TEAM.

A question for discussion:

Now that Kansas has finished with a 12-1 record, do they have a chance for a share of the BCS title?   Seems as if some pundits are calling USC to get a piece despite their two conference losses, including an embarrassing loss to Stanford, and winning their conference.  After the Orange Bowl win, does Kansas have a potential case?

They don't, but they should.  They now have a win over a top-5 ranked team and their only loss was to the #3 team, at the time.  Combine that with no embarrassing losses (OSU at home to UI, USC at home to Stanford, LSU at home to Arkansas) and dominating their schedule, as weak as it is, and they should have just as much a claim to the title as a team like Ohio State.
