Oregon, Kansas and Arizona State All Impress (and Other Assorted Week 9 Thoughts)
READ MORE:

Ducks 24, Trojans 17

I didn't mean any disrespect to Oregon by picking USC, I just thought the big turnovers would go the other way. Instead it's the Ducks who proved to be a legit national title contender. If it wasn't for that late fumble against California there would be few questions about the number one team in the country. There are many fans who don't think the Ducks should be penalized for that, but a loss is a loss. I don't know what the likelihood of this scenario is, but I'd imagine if LSU and Oregon win out we're going to see a very, very close disparity between Ohio State, Boston College and the two one-loss team (assuming OSU and BC win out).

Should Jonathan Stewart be the Ducks top Heisman candidate? Dixon performed well on the ground and through the air but nothing spectacular. Stewart, however, top 100 yards and 2 touchdowns against very good USC defense.

Kansas 19, Texas A&M 11

OK, I'm a little late but I finally buy the Jayhawks as a good football team. Stop the run and don't turn over the football. If you do that every week you're going to win and Mark Mangino has been effective with that formula all year.

It helps when the opposing coach forgets about his biggest strength. When Jovorskie Lane doesn't get the football enough the Aggies lose. I don't even watch Texas A&M that often and it's obvious to everyone except the head coach. Just 7 carries yesterday.

Arizona State 31, California 20

I know Dennis Erickson is a great coach, I just needed to see the Sun Devils in action against a decent football team. Mission accomplished, and now there's yet another undefeated team that has a legit shot to sneak their way into the national title picture. Next week: @ Oregon. Hello! I hate to keep doubting the Sun Devils, and I was impressed, but now it's time to actually play a road game. Can Rudy Carpenter stay error free with the Eugene crowd?

Other quick hits:

- Sure go ahead and call Kentucky overrated, but very few teams, if any, would play well the week after back-to-back games against Florida and LSU.

- Did I mention Mark Richt is a badass?

- I still don't know what to make of Connecticut. Once again, if you can run the football and limit turnovers you win games. Sounds simple, but very few teams actually execute it. Credit the Huskies, they might actually be a Big East title threat. Not sure what that says about the league, though.

- I know you guys outside the Big Ten don't want to admit this, but Ohio State is actually good. It's not flashy which is apparently a prerequisite for being a top team, but Tressel ball is going to get them back to the title game.

How is Tim Tebow a Heisman candidate?  I'm not saying he isn't good, or even great, but he's not the best player on his own team.  That's Percy Harvin.  I think I'd kill to have Percy Harvin play for the Badgers.

Tebow is the only QB in the D1 that has thrown and ran for a TD in every game this year.

This is a great point. I think that some people are quick to bust out with the "I knew they were overrated the whole time", but those people should remember that the loss to Miss St was only one game. And the Wildcats really have played enough great games against very good/great teams that I don't think it's reasonable to say that they're not a very good team.

In my opinion, calling Kentucky overrated stems from the same attitude that makes people vote USC as the preseason #1 every year. Sure, usually USC puts out a great team. But that doesn't necessarily mean they'll always be great. And sure, Kentucky usually has a pretty bad team. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it can't change. They can be a good team, too. I swear it's possible.

He's a candidate because he has 1947 passing yards, a 65.8% comp. percentage, 18 TD, and 3 INT...Yes, I agree; Percy Harvin is great too, but last time I checked, you need a good QB to give a good WR the ball...

He's been great, but I think you should be the best player on your team in order to win Heisman... thats my thinking at least. lol

Can Rudy Carpenter stay error free with the Eugene crowd?

It's not like he's been error free anywhere else this season. He's looked like crap in the 1st quarter of almost every game, but slowly manages to get it together as the game goes on.

It will come down to who can control the ball. So far this season, ASU is #1 in the country in time of possession, while Oregon is #76. ASU should be able to run the ball on Oregon. I like their chances, even up at Autzen. If they can run well, Rudy won't have too many chances to make mistakes.

No, Kentucky is overrated because there is no consistency in their defense. You won't win the SEC with out playing good-great defense every conference game.

I will now officially jump on the Kansas bandwagon. Their defense was very impressive against that running game of the Aggies. Normally you would think their rush defensive stats were good because have not face the competition (like BC), but last night they went up against one of the top rushing offenses in the nation and shut them down early. McAnderson and Sharp is a really nice one two combo and Reesing is not making the mistakes of a young quarterback. I can see Kansas winning the Big 12 North, or should I say winning the game against Missouri.

I'm sorry...I must have missed it when everyone was saying that Kentucky was the best team in the SEC.

According to their ranking, they were supposedly the second best team in the SEC East and third best team in the SEC. Considering that LSU, Florida, Georgia, and Auburn are all in the SEC. I'd say that is slightly overrated.

But you know how rankings work. No one thinks BC is honestly the 2nd best team in the country right now. But they're #2 because they've won all their games. Kentucky was ranked high because they have had several quality wins, and they had only one loss, with a pretty tough schedule. The rankings are fluid, and more of an indication of how well a team has played, not necessarily how good they are.

Kentucky is probably about where they should be now. They benefited (in votes) by "upseting" Louisville back when they were top ten before anyone realized they had no business being there, then rode a win over LSU to a high ranking. Sure, it was higher than it should have been, but that happens when everyone else keeps losing. They're a good team in a good conference, but not great. Things usually work out in the end. So you're right, they really can't be knocked as "overrated" all things considered.

I just learned a couple of hours ago that College Gameday is coming back to Eugene for the ASU/Oregon game next Saturday.

Chris, Lee, Kirk & Co. return for an encore

"Mark Richt is a badass."

How about Richt is just an ass?  How do you coach your kids to get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty?  Prove to the world that Georgia is just a bunch of crackers.

I have seen individual fans all across sports do things that were just totally uncalled for.  Fans throwing food at the visiting band in Knoxville...people keying cars in Tallahassee...Gator fans cussing/screaming at Tennessee fans at the SEC championship (UT wasn't playing in that game mind you).  But Georgia, in my opinion took the cake Saturday.  I'm sure people that were watching the game on TV didn't see it because of a TV timeout, but when Percy Harvin was injured on a play, not only were all of the UGA fans cheering, but the band played the fight song and Hairy was doing a little dance.  How classless can you be?

I watched the UT/USC game later last night and was glad to see that Tennessee at least had the class to clap for an injured gamecock player when he was helped off the field.  Which I believe is what is the proper/usual reaction to an injured player.

So, to all you Georgia fans out there, congratulations, it was a good game, but you all are still a bunch of low class rednecks.  Go Vols! so, the only way Georgia sees the SEC championship is in the stands.

I'm confused by this post a little.

1) You're saying that Richt is an ass because he was showing the Florida team and fans that it won't be a cake walk; he was willing to risk a penalty for a statement in the game early. Yup; biggest ass I've ever seen in college football. (sarcasm if you didn't catch it).

2) Your bringing up another instance that nobody else saw, but even if it was true; what exactly does that have to do with Richt?  Because he chose to make a statement early, he now controls what everyone in the stadium does??

Please.

Unsportmanlike conduct should never be condoned by a coach, period.  How do you coach young men one week that it is okay and then expect them to not act that way when it could cost you the game.  His little circus trick probably gets him a hefty fine in the NFL.

Second, there were almost 85,000 people at the game yesterday, I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw it.  I meant this as a seperate comment but, since you mentioned it... you ever heard the saying that that $hit flows down hill?  Well, if the coach sets the example for the team then maybe he is to blame.

This (cheering when a player is hurt) isn't even seen in the NFL very often.  College players are 18-22 years old and your telling me it's okay for someone to cheer for them getting hurt because the TV didn't catch it?

If you can read; you will notice I never once said anything about the action (Harvin's injury) itself. I do agree it is something classless, but with lack of spacing between in your post; I assumed it fell within the same context, of putting blame on the coach.

"Unsportmanlike conduct should never be condoned by a coach, period."

How amazing you put one's opinion; and with a "period" at the end, make it look as if it were a fact. You do not know the details of how it was handled, nor do I, or anyone else for that matter except for the players and coaches. Heck; for all you know, they could of had an hour long discussion in the locker room going over reasoning, why they would, and it be okayed with the entire team.

You don't know, and to just backup your very first sentence with "Prove to the world that Georgia is just a bunch of crackers." and finish with "but you all are still a bunch of low class rednecks" Yea; you seem all high and mighty on the class scale.

As far as ASU-Oregon goes -- ASU seems to be depending on being able to come back from a couple scores down. The Duckies aren't really down with that, especially at home. So feel free to not play the first half. By the time you're down by 30, we'll hang another 25 on you before the game ends. Look for Dixon and Stewart to have huge games. And then the BSC will have to move us up.

You know this is an opinion poll.  I don't believe adding a period to my opinion means I think it's a fact.  It means nothing you can say about it is going to change my mind. I don't care how far in advance they planned it.  How would you feel about that call if it leads to an endzone brawl like the FIU-UM game last year.  I feel he (Richt) cheapened himself and his team.

On another note, my best friends dad, a very wise man and a huge Redskins fan, chastised his own team when one of the receivers got a celebration penalty after a touchdown.  His words were simple..."act like you've been there before."

If it's at the end of the game I have no problem with it.  They had a great game plan and totally dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.  They beat a team that has had their number for a long time.  That's worth storming the field for.

As for calling them crackers and rednecks, you're right, that was bad on my part and I apologize for that.
