I nearly laughed out-loud (in the middle of my students' exam period) when I read the latest dribble on ESPN. Apparently the University of Georgia President is upset about being left to "play" Hawaii in the BCS while the other schools duked it out.
The University of Georgia complaining about the BCS is like the Republican AND Democratic parties coming together to complain about the spiraling costs of advertising in primaries. If I'm not mistaken the SEC (which my school is a proud and ineffective member of) was the champion of this "system".
If you get a chance, look at his proposal: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3186232
Really, I love the arrogance. When the BCS was developed, it really put some major cash into the pockets of the major conferences. (Not that they didn't have enough before) Now he's proposing a playoff. Gee, there's a shocker. But not only is he proposing a playoff system that will likely not include on a regular basis any of the "other" conferences (much like the BCS), but it will also force everyone to drop back to an 11-game schedule. Ha ha. I don't know about you, but this is how I read this:
Hey, you mid-majors. This system sucks and we're going to fix it. Sorry about that extra paycheck you get to roll into Ann Arbor or Austin, but we've gotta make sure a good team doesn't get screwed out of a shot at a national title. It's only fair (to us).
I hate it for Georgia, but it's time for them to accept that they blew it. They lost to South Carolina (ha ha ha) and then they lost convincingly to Tennessee. If you can't win your division, you don't deserve to complain about not getting a real crack at the national championship. I could almost see West Virginia trying to make this case, but definitely not Georgia. Maybe next year, Dawg.
