Alexander Ovechkin fed by a Nicklas Backstrom return pass scored in front of the new with 10.7 second left in overtime to lift the Capitals to their 4th straight win. The win pushes the Caps to 19-10-3 on the season, 8 points in the lead in the Southeast Division, 5 points off of the best record in the Eastern Conference. The overtime goal was also Ovechkin’s 6th overtime score, setting a new franchise record held by Kelly Miller and Peter Bondra.

It was also a win that didn’t thrill HC Bruce Boudreau. With a 4-2 lead in the third period, the Capitals allowed the Islanders to crawl back and force overtime, something Boudreau took note.
“We let them back in the game when he had them on the hook at 2-0,” Boudreau said. “It looked like we were taking everything for granted, that everything was going to turn out okay. We got lucky today.”
Ovechkin saved the day for the Caps again. But even Alex knew the Capitals should have never let themselves get in that position.
“I’m happy to have the record,” said Ovechkin, who scored twice in the game. “But we stopped playing after the second period. We didn’t listen to our coach, what he said. We didn’t move, we didn’t skate. So it’s [fortunate] we win the game.”
Boyd Gordon started Washington’s scoring off in the first period, just a bit under 3 minutes into the game, with a wrap around stuffer that MacDonald simply couldn’t handle. It was Gordon’s second tally of the season and put the Caps up 1-0. Brooks Laich would score the Caps second goal, a lucky goal by Laich as the puck slid slowly to the goal, but MacDonald just lost the location of the puck as it slowly went right underneath him and in the net. Talk about one helluva gimme goal. Doug Weight added a goal to end the first period with a 2-1 lead for the Capitals. Caps out shot the home team 15-12 in the first period.
It was all Caps in the second period as they netted two goals and out shot the Islanders 18-8. The first one came on a bomb from D Milan Jurcina. The Jurcina bomb came on a cross ice pass from Karl Alzner. It was Jurcina’s 3rd goal of the season. Last year, Jurcina had 1 goal the whole year with 8 total points. This year he has 3 goals and 7 total points. I like the way Jurcina has been playing, both offensively and back at the blue line since Alzner joined him as blue line duo. They seem to be clicking like Mike Green and Shaone Morrisonn did last season, not as a scoring tandem, but a pretty good blue line combo.
