Ozil reveals Wenger’s plan to build Arsenal team around his talents
Mesut Ozil has confirmed that his exit from Real Madrid was a case of desire for attention and need from employers and more opportunities to play in the first-team. The German midfielder insists that his decision to leave Real Madrid came when he realized that his future at Bernabeu wasn’t the one he had dreamt about.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder claims he is ready to make an impact at Arsenal and help the club end their silverware drought. The Germany international insists Arsenal are top contenders for the Premier League title and his new manager Arsene Wenger is one of the best professionals in his field.
Meanwhile, Wenger has confirmed that Ozil is ready to start against Sunderland on Saturday following the last-minute £42.4 million move on the transfer deadline day. In a press conference at Arsenal’s Colney training center, Ozil told reporters that he had received a warm welcome by the club and that he was settling down well.
“Of course we can challenge for the Premier League,” Ozil said. “I know the team, I know the talent we have here. Everyone wants to be successful and Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We want to achieve things with this team. If course it will be difficult because the league is very balanced, but we work hard to a achieve this.
“We want to play offensive and good football and to keep clean sheets. We want to play attractive football. I can't promise to win trophies, but I promise as a team we will give all to win trophies.
“I feel very good here. It's great to be part of this team. You can see how familiar this club is, when I arrived here everything is great. I feel very well here. The boss is great, I'm sure he will improve me, that is why I decided to come here.”
Ozil, who joined compatriots Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker at Arsenal, further revealed that Wenger had plans to build a squad around his talents. The coveted playmaker claims Wenger has talked to him about his role in the team and he is happy with the French boss’ decisions.
“It is a very respectful treatment at Arsenal,” Ozil added. “This is important for me, to feel good here. This is where I will work every day. I spoke to Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski said this and they were right.
“I would have come here without a fee, that wouldn't be a problem. Of course I am proud of this (price tag), but the most important thing is the manager trusts me. He trusts me.
“When I talked to Arsene on the phone, he was full of respect. Me, as a player, I need the respect and that is why I came here. I don't want to talk about Real Madrid. That topic is over. Hopefully I have many wonderful years here and win many trophies.”
