Ozzie Guillen defends Gary Sheffield's remark on Latino players
You knew Ozzie would have something to say about this, quite a bit actually. I had expected a more public outcry against Gary Sheffield's accusation that Latino players are "more easily controlled." Guillen chose to defend Sheffield:

"He's right," Guillen said. "I agree with him, big time. For example, me. They (meaning Major League Baseball) warned me for wearing my back pocket out. They fined Magglio (Ordonez) $1,000 for wearing his pocket out. "But you see a lot of guys wearing a pocket out. If you're going to have a rule, have it for everybody. And if you fine Magglio, why not fine everybody?"

"Latin players, if they get released, go back to their country with nothing," Guillen said. "Where are you going to work if you don't have baseball? You lose everything. You lose your life. You're done.
That's probably not what Sheffield was getting at, but I can't find a fault with Guillen.

"(American players) are already here. They just go home. But I also agree because how many Japanese players are there? For each one there is an interpreter and someone to give them a massage."How many Latin players are there? Thirty percent? But how many interpreters? You see any (masseurs) for Dominicans? No, you just have to play baseball.

All fair comments, however the truth of the matter is that there are more Latino players in Major League Baseball because that's THE sport everyone plays growing up. You play baseball, that's it. The reason for a decline in black baseball players is simply a shift in the sports we want to play as kids. It's now Football and Basketball that dominate. There's no need to make this a more complicated situation than it is.

Completely agree.  I was listening to Mike & Mike this morning and they both wanted a clarification of what Sheffield meant by "control", and I think that's a legitimate question to ask him: what do you mean by your statement that Hispanic players are easier to "control" than African-American players?  If I was a Hispanic player, I would be thoroughly insulted.

I think what he said is also insulting to black players... I mean, Sheff is making them out to be these renegades. Part of being a member of any organization (sports, business, whatever) is buying into the rules on a certain level. It doesn't matter what race you are, that's the reality of making money in this day and age.

And his statement is just misinformed. If baseball was trying to discourage blacks from playing, why are they featuring Price on the cover of Baseball America? Hyping him on mlb.com? The reality is, like many have already said, that kids are growing up playing sports like basketball and football. So if they do become professional athletes, the NFL or NBA is where they are more likely to end up.

What does that even mean? What does that have to do with anything??? Is he also trying to say that black players want to make it in major league baseball less than Latinos and therefore put up with less? Hell, if you want me to wear a mohawk while paying me millions to play baseball, sign me up!!! I don't care if I have to go home to central Illinois or Siberia, I'll do whatever you want me to!

Sheffield's comments would piss me off if I were Hispanic. I like Sheff, and I think he made those comments just to let some air out. He has a habit of just saying something to stir it up. He grew up here in Tampa and he knows that outside of the high school he went to(Hillsborough) everybody loves football. It don't matter what color, they all love football.
