Packers Offer Brett Favre $20 Million To Stay Retired
Brett Favre Can't Be Bought For $20 Million
If there were any lingering questions about just how badly Brett Favre wants to play football this year, they can now officially be put to rest.

That's because it's being reported today that Favre turned down $20 million from the Packers to stay retired.

I don't know about you, but I could easily retire for a cool $20 million.

Apparently the $20 million was going to be paid out over the course of 10 years, so Favre would not have gotten it in one lump sum, but still. That's a lot of money to do absolutely nothing.

The idea was floated by Packers President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy on Wednesday during the meeting he had with Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, at Cook’s office in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Apparently the three of them met for four hours, followed by Favre leaving while Murphy and Cook spoke for yet another three hours.

And nothing came of it.

I don't want to call Green Bay's offer to Favre a bribe - since, after all, he did retire of his own free will and there are reasons why the Packers would like him to remain retired - but I can't remember ever hearing of a situation like this.

There's also word that Favre will show up to camp on Friday, which would be an absolute circus.

Oh, but just remember, Favre has said multiple times he doesn't want to be a distraction to his teammates. Yeah, because you clearly haven't been for one the last month, nor will you be one if you show up to camp. What an idiot.

The biggest problem for the Packers, and Favre should know this too, is that if he comes to camp, it'll likely split the team into two camps. The Rodgers camp and the Favre camp. The Packers, in their statements to the public, have clearly been behind Rodgers all along. But there's no question that certain Packers players - I'm looking at you Charles Woodson - haven't exactly towed the company line.

At least if Favre never shows up, that fire likely never gets stoked enough to be an irreconcible problem. But if Favre comes to camp on Friday, forget it, you might as well just stick a fork in Green Bay's season - whether Favre stays or goes.

If the Packers don't want to trade Favre to a team that could hurt them down the road, or don't want to give him up for virtually nothing, then they shouldn't have to. I think they've earned the right.
So at least let the man return to camp.

You already know how this will work out. Rodgers will be terrible, eventually injured, and then all of a sudden hugs and kisses will be thrown his way.

I disagree. I have faith in Rogers. I think that he has shown excellent maturity in his overall handling of this absurd situation, and he will show enough skill to keep the job, no matter where Favre is. I think Rogers' injury last season was a fluke.

He'll be working in a somewhat simplified offense, and will throw a lot less INT's than Favre would, and will take the Packers to the playoffs. And they'll lose in the first round... which is no better or worse than Favre would do, if you ask me.

It absolutely is a bribe - and it's sickening.

And Pat -- Rodgers broken foot was 2006 -- when he was out for over two months -- but maybe you are referring to last year's hamstring injury in which he hurt the whole month of December.... Hmm.     For someone who has thrown 329 CAREER yards.. I think it's a bit early for you claim he'll get them to the playoffs...

A simplified offense is easy for any defense to pick apart.  You have no CLUE how many int's he will throw -- and the Pack will not go to the playoffs with this man.... especially if they don't get their offense together.  Don't say it's no better or worse than with Favre you dingbat.  His "maturity" has nothing to do with this -- and honestly -- I'm sure half of it comes from him constantly being reassured by the Packers Management that he WILL start.  That doesn't take maturity -- that takes common sense.

This is on the Packers at this point.  Whether we like it or not, Brett did have the option to comeback and he's used it.  Ted Thompson has known for well over a month about this and has refused to to do anything about it.  If we're going to move on, as they say we are, then lets move on.  Move Brett and lets go with Rodgers.  It shouldn't be too hard to find a team that would take on a guy coming off of a 4,000 yard, MVP-caliber season.

Instead Thompson has been trying to fight a PR war with Brett and in the process has created a circus around his team.  Its always nice when the front office goes out and sabotages the whole team.

Who amoung us did not know that Brett would not get the itch to play?

I agree if you wants to continue to play he should and he can play anywhere he chooses.

the packers need farve. i don't see y they would try and make him stayed retired. i mean i understand they want to start fresh this season and give the other guys a shot to play but farve have led the packers for years, y try to change that now. i mean he clearly doesn't want to retire you can see it in his eyes hes not ready to leave the packers. just because hes old and prob shouldn't be playing doesn't mean you should make up his mind for him. he wants to play still, let the guy play and lead the packers to a superbowl.

In a realated story, the Packers have yet to offer me a single penny to stay retired.

I've gotta say although I think both sides have handled this situation about as poorly as you can, the idea the Packers would offer $20 million to keep Favre retired is so inappropriate I don't know where to begin.  Can they even do that as the NFL's only publicly-owned company?  How does that affect the salary cap?  It seems to me if such an offer was made it sounds awfully shady and ethically questionable at best.

It's also stupid, because this was never about money.

If the Pack are offering money to keep Favre retired, they've reached a level of desperation to where they either need to trade him to the team of his choice and try to recoup some value for him, or they need to release him and let the chips fall as they may.  Let him go to Minnesota.  I don't think the Vikings are a Super Bowl lock if they get him.  Favre never had the greatest luck in the Triple-H Dome in his career if you remember.

Maybe in the last round if he is still there. I did that with Rex Grossman that year that he dominated for the first 6 games...then came that Cardinals game.

REX GROSSMAN IS WHO I THOUGHT HE WAS!!!

The Pack front office, doest look too good right now. This bribe is a joke. If the Packers are so dead set on starting Rodgers tell Favre thats what is gonna happen and let him come into camp. Heck, trade him to the Bears if TT and company doesnt want there trade him to Chicago. Look his #1 WR would be Marty Booker. If thats so bad, then let him compete for the GB job. As bad as Favre was looking, the Pack front office looks 10 times worse right now

Rogers hopes you're right.  Every time the ball falls incomplete and he's headed back to the huddle, you've got to wonder if he's looking into his teammates eyes to see if they still have the faith.

Man....I still have that game TiVo'd....whenever I'm feeling down, I'll put that game on, fast-forward to the tail part of the 3rd quarter....and suddenly everything's better again !!

Thanks to Denny Green, of course !

So what are you a Packers fan or Favre fan?

I respect all the Pack fans here who are upset with the way the front office is handling this, but I have yet to hear one Pack fan say they would quit supporting the Pack over this. You must remember one thing, the Packers were here before Favre and will be here long after Favre

Roger Goodell said that he would reinstate Brett Favre. So why won't he ?  The NFL is applying pressure so their franchise can benefit financially from holding Favre hostage till an offer of their liking comes along.  The league is in collusion with the Packers to effect an outcome that will benefit them both.

The choices are the same as a week ago: Release him,  Trade him,  or bring him to training camp.  In any case I'm sure that James Cook will advise legal action if the NFL continues to violate the union contract by not reinstating BF.

Sure will ... then Goodell will have to deal with the Player's Association... which will make it all even uglier.  This is beyond ridiculous.

Favre is a player, not a coach.

I say that because, as a player he's entitled to come back and try to play 1. Because he's proven he can play, 2. Because he's healthy, and 3. Because there is more than one team who wants him to play for them.

If his return to training camp is a "fiasco" it's not his problem, nor is it a problem for any "player."  That's a coach's, and an executive's problem.  If they want to handle it, they will.  If they don't, they won't.

For anyone to point a negative finger at Favre, however, simply because he couldn't make up his mind about whether he wanted to play again or not, is ignorance in my opinion.  He's devoted about half of his life to playing a game, for our entertainment ... and in many cases, he's done it better than almost any who came before him.

Whatever team he plays for has my support .... so long as he's starting this year!  At least he won't be surrounded by a "cheating" controversy (Brady), a criminal scandal (Vick), commentary on whether he'll live up to his name (Young), commentary on whether he can handle the pressure of a Hall of Famer backup (Rodgers), or a bunch of commentary on whether he'll be able to hack it this year with his girlfriend in the stands (Romo).

My vote is that Favre will cut the cheese and find a way to Minnesota.  Although they'll become GB's biggest rival ... that's good for football (Goodell/Thompson), and at least he'll be appreciated, respected, and more importantly STARTED!
