Packers sign S Morgan Burnett to 4-year, $24.75 million contract extension
Morgan Burnett’s new contract is worth $24.75 million over four years, and could build up to $26 million with incentives. The deal also includes an $8.25 million signing bonus and $15 million guaranteed over the first two years, according to CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason LaCanfora.
The 24-year-old Morgan Burnett had been slated to earn $1.323 million in the final year of his rookie deal. With his talent and age, Morgan Burnett could have attracted a big money contract on the open market. But the Green Bay Packers did not wish to lose the anchor of their secondary on the open market and have now locked him up to a multi-year deal.
The deal comes days after it was reported that the Green Bay Packers had been working on a contract extension for Morgan Burnett last week, and they hammered it out quickly.
Morgan Burnett’s contract extension is somewhat similar to the deals other young safeties have signed recently. Kam Chancellor agreed to a five-year, $29.325 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason. While Oakland Raiders’ Tyyon Branch signed a four-year, $26.6 million deal last offseason.
A 2010 third-round pick out of Georgia, Morgan Burnett became a starter at the beginning of his rookie season, but ended up missing the final 12 games after tearing his ACL in October of that year. However, when healthy, Morgan Burnett has started every single game (all 16) over the last two seasons.
Last season, Morgan Burnett led the Green Bay Packers with a career-high 123 tackles, and tied for third with two interceptions. Morgan Burnett also had two sacks and two forced fumbles to cap the 2012 season.

The Green Bay Packers have now extended three key pieces of their future during this offseason. Back in April, the Green Bay Packers agreed to contract extension quarterback Aaron Rodgers and outside linebacker Clay Mathews. The Green Bay Packers also signed linebacker Brad Jones to a multi-year deal this offseason. Defensive tackle B.J. Raji could be the next one in line to receive big contract, as the former Pro Bowler (2011) is also in the last year of his rookie deal.
