There's little question who was the biggest winner of the Let Others Win Tour during Tiger Woods' absence due to knee surgery. Padraig Harrington not only defended his British Open title, but came up huge this afternoon at Oakland Hills Country Club to capture the PGA Championship and his second straight major.
Paddy won the second Tigerless major on his own merit, but he definitely has two golfers to thank other than Tiger.
Most notably, Sergio Garcia for yet again failing to put it all together on a major Sunday. Sergio had the lead a various points throughout the day, but would follow up a great drive with an approach into the water or bunker. Or a great approach with a missed putt. Classis Sunday Sergio. This was, without question, his best chance to win a major.
Also to thank is Ben Curtis for wearing a Detroit Lions hat. He should know better than to think he can win a big event sporting the colors of consistent failure. It's little surprise he faded as the stress built during the marathon Sunday of golf outside of Detroit.
Very few tabbed Harrington to be the individual to make good on Tiger's absence, but it's good for golf that a talented veteran risen up and announced he's ready to challenge Woods' dominance. Of course, the variable not present in these last two majors, is Tiger's presence. It's obvious every golfer on tour has an added dose of confidence.
Harrington used that extra boost to give us a little dose of Tiger himself, sticking approach shot after approach shot as the pressure rose, and sinking clutch putts on 16, 17 and 18. He doesn't possess the marketing power of Tiger, but it's good to see another golfer step up and wow us in his absence.
