I understand that our opponents are fielding professional basketball players, but I don't think it's too much to ask our best collegians to make it past the first round of the Pan Am Games. The United States saw a 14-point second quarter lead disappear as Panama held on for a 75-67 win in the men's Pan Am Games preliminary round Thursday. The U.S. loss, coupled with Argentina's 71-69 win over Uruguay, eliminated the Americans from advancing to the medal round semifinals.
The U.S. built a 29-15 lead with eight minutes, six seconds left in the first half before Panama went on a 16-4 run that tied the game at 33 at halftime. Panama led 42-40 with 5:30 left in the third quarter before going on a 17-4 run to take a 57-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
