Pat Burrell Signs A 2 Year, $16 Million Contract With The Tampa Bay Rays
It's The End Of The World As We Know It: The Tampa Bay Rays Just Signed A Big Name Free Agent.
For the first time ever, the Tampa Bay Rays went into the offseason as the defending American League champions, and had to concentrate on how to STAY on top, instead of trying to figure out how to somehow get themselves out of the AL East cellar.

The Rays made their first big move today, reportedly  with former Phillies outfielder Pat Burrell (unless you consider the Matt Joyce deal to be a "big move"). They must have looked at a lot more than his performance in the World Series against the Rays. Burrell batted .071 in that series, with only 1 hit in 14 at bats. That one hit was an important one, however, as he later scored, giving the Phillies an early 2-0 lead in the game 5 clincher.

ESPN just reported this, and gave us a glimpse at the Rays projected lineup for 2009:

While Burrell certainly improves their team offensively, I'm not sold on the idea that it makes them better than the Yankees or Red Sox, which has already been stated by some members of the media.

While the Red Sox lineup has declined a bit in recent years, especially with David Ortiz starting to show signs of aging and becoming more injury-prone. Based on that, they might be better than the Red Sox right now, if the Sox don't make any more moves. Don't count on that, however, because the Sox are still rumored to be looking around for another bat.

The Yankees, however, have one of the scariest lineups around, with the addition of guys like Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira. They now have Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, Teixeira, Swisher, Xavier Nady Johnny Damon and Jorge Posada. The Rays lineup is quite good, but still has to improve to become better than the Yankees.

No matter how you slice it, the AL East will once again be the most exciting division in baseball. Hopefully the Orioles and Blue Jays can find a way to compete again as well.

It's exciting to see the Rays can also be competitive in the free agent market.

I'm no Rays fan, but I am a Yankees hater.  To say that the Yankees have "have one of the scariest lineups around," is going a little strong, don't you think?  Here are the numbers:

Swisher's VORP last year: 3.3
Cano's VORP: 6.6 (just behind KC's juggernaut Alberto Callaspo)
Nady's VORP: 6.8
Posada's VORP: 7.4

Carlos Pena's VORP: 32.8
Burrell's VORP: 34.6
Longoria's VORP: 35.3 (just ahead of Texieria)
Upton's VORP: 32.8
Matt Joyce VORP: 8.8

Just saying....

It's mighty convenient of you to pick some of the worst players in the Yankee lineup and compare them to the best that the Rays have. Also, a lot of that depends on the replacement player as well.

Compare those guys numbers to the VORP for guys who are the Yankees equivalents (Tex, DJ, ARod, etc), and you'll see a much more valid comparison.

I'm a Yankees hater as well, but that doesn't change the fact that they have bought one of the best lineups in the league.

they may have bought one of the best lineups in the league, but they are a bunch of overpriced primadonnas, pat burrell is hardly what i consider a high priced free agent, he has back problems, cant run a lick, and cant play the field for nothing, but his bat leading off the bottom part of the rays lineup i believe is gonna help the rays score more runs this year, bottom line it all comes down to pitching, if the rays pitchers pitch as they did last year, and with a full season for david price , they will compete and possibly win the division again, without good solid pitching, they will fall short of what they did last year, I LOVE THE FACT THE RAYS IN MY MIND ARE STILL DOING IT WITH FARMHANDS, AND ROOKIES, THEY HAVE BUILT A VALID TEAM THAT I BELIEVE WILL CHALLENGE FOR YEARS TO COME, and burrell yes a nice fit but compared to ramirez, and alot of the other free agents that were out there, not at all high priced or even in the same league, he will be a good role player

When you look at the deal,it's really not that big of a splash. I believe it will make him the third highest paid Ray behind Pena and Kazmir. I could be wrong about that. So, at the end of the day I think both sides will benefit. Who's to say that Burrell doesn't post bigger offensive numbers not having to log field time. He's back home in Florida. I'll bet on Andrew Friedman and his staff. Great sign!

In 2009:
Crawford will make $8.25M
Kazmir will make $6M
Pena will make $8M
Burrell will make $8M (assumed)

Kazmir's contract goes up to $8M in '09, and Pena's goes up to $10.125M

Pat Burrell is a journeyman free agent, not a BIG NAME.

Well, he's not a journeyman as he's only played with ONE organization for nine years, but yes I agree with the intended spirit of your comment.
