Patriots add undrafted rookie Justin Green to their secondary
The 22-year-old Justin Green, played collegiately at Illinois, initially beginning his career as a running back before moving back his previous cornerback position in the final two weeks before the 2010 season. Justin Green Started 29 games for the Illini over a four-season career, and was a three time academic All-Big 10 selection at Illinois. Last season as a senior, Justin Green played in 12 games and started 11 contests for the Illini while making 36 tackles and six pass breakups.
Justin Green is the fourth former Illinois player on the New England Patriots’ roster this offseason, joining safety Tayon Wilson in their defensive back field. The New England Patriots also host former Illini tight end Hoomanawanui and rookie defensive end Michael Buchanan.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Justin Green, who was not invited to the NFL combine, had some intriguing records at Illinois’ pro day, running a 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds, completed 21 bench press reps, while posting a long jump of 10'1" and a vertical of 36.5.
The New England Patriots worked out Justin Green on Thursday, before signing him to a contract over the weekend. Justin Green is a long shot to make the final roster, but he provides depth in the defensive backfield at a time when there’s uncertainty surrounding the availability status of starting right cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, in light of his impeding suspension for a DUI incident in early July.
Anyhow, Justin Green’s addition brings up the New England Patriots’ roster number to 89 players, one short of the maximum number of players allowed on the 90-man offseason roster, per NBA rules. It remains to be seen if and where the New England Patriots will use their final open roster spot, before training camp starts on coming Sunday.
