We're not yet sure exactly what the charges are, but it's obviously in connection with the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, who was reportedly a friend of Hernandez at one time and was apparently dating Hernandez's girlfriend's sister.
There have been rumors that the Patriots would immediately cut Hernandez if and when he was arrested, so we'll see if there's any truth to that. My gut instinct is that they should at least wait for an arraignment to see what charges will be levied against Hernandez, and whether or not they'll stick.
This looks pretty bad for Hernandez, but we'll see how it all shakes out.
UPDATE -- 10:30 a.m.
Hernandez has now been released by the New England Patriots, according to the team's official twitter account:
The New England #Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez.— New England Patriots (@Patriots) June 26, 2013
The team also released the following statement about Hernandez:
NFL teams usually have pretty solid connections with local law enforcement, so there's a high likelihood that the Patriots know a lot more than the rest of us, and this definitely does not bode well for Hernandez.
We'll keep you updated as the story progresses.
