A very disturbing rumor is going around right now that Pau Gasol will be traded to the New York Knicks for Amar'e Stoudemire.
Luckily, this is little more than just a rumor. It's not clear where this rumor started, but it's here now and is even being talked about on ESPN, but largely in part to debunk it.
There are so many reasons why the Los Angeles Lakers wouldn't trade Pau Gasol to the New York Knicks for Amar'e Stoudemire. Let's start with the obvious: Amar'e can't even play right now. He's been injured, and is so fragile that he has another two years on his contract, and both are non-insured.
Pau Gasol is at least playing, even though he's injured, but he and Coach Mike D'Antoni have both talked about how limited he is in terms of his athleticism.
Another reason why this won't happen is the contracts. Amar'e is on contract to get $19.9 million this season, $21.6 million next and $23.4 million the next. Pau will get significantly less, earning $19 million this season and $19.2 next.
The Lakers have clearly worked to make sure their contracts expire at the same time as Kobe Bryant's, with the exception of Steve Nash and possibly Dwight Howard. There's been speculation that this is because they will look to lure LeBron James to LA, but no matter the reason, it definitely isn't to take on Amar'e's salary.
This isn't to say that Pau won't be traded, but don't worry Lakers fans; it won't be for Amar'e Stoudemire.
