Pau Gasol Unhappy With DíAntoniís Offense
Pau Gasol has taken a significant step back this year in Mike D’Antoni’s offense. Without the presence of veterans such as Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, and the acquisition of an entirely different roster, Mike D’Antoni has been forced to make the Lakers offense into more of a run and gun style this year.
The problem with this new offense is that the Lakers best player is an aging big man named Pau Gasol. As a result, Gasol is not getting the ball in the post nearly as much as he would prefer in this Phoenix-lite offense, which has led to his statistical downfall.
According to Bill Plaschke of the LA Times, “The fact that I’m not getting the ball in the post affects directly my aggressiveness,” he said. “When I’m not getting the ball where I want to, where I’m most effective, where I can bang guys and utilize my skill, that affects my aggressiveness and overall intensity….This year hasn’t been ideal, certain things are not ideal for me, but that’s not going to change any time soon.”
To make matters worse, Gasol is not only frustrated with D’Antoni’s offense, but he is frustrated with D’Antoni as a person. Recently, D’Antoni hasn't been quick to praise Gasol, but he has been quick to criticize him, in particular, his toughness.
“I don’t pay attention. Mike is sometimes all over the place, I don’t give much credit to things like that,” he said.
When Gasol was asked whether or not D’Antoni has ever approached Pau about the subject, he replied, “Nope, zero. Nope, zero. Like I said, it’s not ideal, but it is what it is.”
Hopefully, Kobe’s return will resurrect Pau’s play and inject new life into the multi-talented big man because if Pau is popping three’s instead of posting-up, the Lakers are going to be going fishing before the playoffs even start.
