The big man feels very confident about this season, likely because he knows as the number one option at the position, he won’t be on trade block, like he has been nearly every single other year.
Also, his style of play fits much better with Mike D’Antoni’s system.
"I think I have the most uncertain period behind me. The team has suffered a lot of changes, but as far as me, I am back in the position of a lot of responsibility, which I like, and I'm just going to focus on getting healthy. Now with Dwight gone I am the reference inside and I am more like I was a couple of years back when we made the Finals three straight times and won two straight championships.”
This is also the first off-season in a long time where Gasol has really taken it easy, in terms of basketball.
He’s been doing work with UNICEF, traveling with his brother Marc Gasol and focused on getting well.
Though, it’s hard to feel like Gasol wasn’t throwing a jab with that last comment. I can’t figure out if it’s at D’Antoni’s usage of Gasol (which was just ridiculous) or at Howard, for one reason or another.
It’s nice to hear the fire in his words though; that’s for sure!
