Pellegrini enjoys 3-0 delight as Man City put Man Utd to the sword
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini was “delighted” after his side defeated Manchester United 3-0 at the Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Chilean tactician was pleased to see his team handover a brilliant overall performance on the road.
Pellegrini reserved special praise for striker Edin Dzeko for scoring a brilliant brace, which proved to be crucial in defeating the Premier League champions. Pellegrini’s side has picked up victories over Manchester United both at home and away this season.
Manchester City first defeated their archrivals back in September at the Etihad Stadium with a 4-1 scoreline. Pellegrini was happy to see his side produce another round of good performance both in the attack and defense.
The comfortable win sends Manchester City flying to the second spot on the league table where they have replaced Liverpool. Manchester City are now within three points of the league leaders, Chelsea. However, since Pellegrini’s side has two games in hand they can soon replace the Blues from the top of the table.
Pellegrini urged his team to continue with their good form after a third straight win and a clean sheet.
“I am very delighted because I think we played very well, not only in attacking but also in defending,” Pellegrini said. “In the last two games we scored eight [goals], but also we improve a lot in defending. It is our fifth [league] clean sheet in a row and at the end of the season it is important not to concede goals. Against a very good team with important players, we didn't give them any chances to score.”
Dzeko drew first blood in the game only 45 seconds after the kickoff. The goal was the third fastest goal to be scored in a Manchester derby. The Bosnian striker doubled Manchester City’s lead by adding another one goal to his tally in the second half. Dzeko the brace also took
Dzeko’s goal-tally for the season to 20; making him the fourth player this season to score 20 or more goals for Manchester City. Yaya Toure added the third goal for Manchester City.
Pellegrini reserved special praise for the Bosnian striker and said that he felt good to see Dzeko work hard to earn his place in the first-team.
“I am very happy for him because he is a player that I think improves a lot this season, not only because he scores goals but because he is working the whole match,” Pellegrini said. “At the start of the season maybe he was not working so hard without the ball. Today I think Edin is in a very good moment, because he scored and he worked the whole match.”
