
Coach Bill O'Brien announced via the team's official Twitter account that Kersey is leaving due to personal reasons and will remain enrolled in school.
Receivers Justin Brown and Devon Smith transferred to Oklahoma and Marshall, respectively, during the offseason. This left the Nittany Lions with a depleted, inexperienced unit.
Kersey was the team's returning leading receiver with five receptions in 2011.
Sophomore Allen Robinson and tight end Kyle Carter have been quarterback Matt McGloin's top targets so far this season, but other players will have to emerge in order for the Penn State offense to have success.
