USC Lands Penn State's RB Silas Redd

Blog Photo - Penn State's RB Silas Redd Heading to USCFrom one sanctioned program to another, Silas Redd is about to make an already strong USC team even stronger.  With 19 returning starters on offense, one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, and – most importantly – the team’s first bowl eligible season in three years, the Trojans may have what it takes to break the SEC’s streak of 6-straight BCS Championships.

Redd was Penn State’s top offensive threat last season, rushing for 1,241 yards and scoring 7 touchdowns.  He’ll be a Junior this season.

The Trojans lost the talented but troublesome Marc Tyler to the NFL (trying out for the Packers currently) but still return their leading rusher in 5th-year Senior Curtis McNeal.  McNeal ran for 1,005 yards with an impressive 6.9 yards per carry, while Tyler ran for 568 yards, missing time due to injury and suspension.  Despite his output last year, McNeal is more of a number-2 back at 5’7”, 190, while Redd at 5’10”, 209 has what it takes to be a workhorse.

Trojan Head Coach Lane Kiffin wasn’t prepared to let Redd out of his reach.  Kiffin reportedly visited Redd’s house and sold Redd on USC based on the school’s history as well as the benefits of playing a year with Heisman hopeful Senior quarterback Matt Barkley.

But that wasn’t it.  Kiffin also had backup quarterback Max Wittek – a youth football teammate of Redd’s – give Redd a tour of campus and he was sold.

With a weak out-of-conference schedule and what should be another down year in the Pac-12, Oregon will be the main threat in the way of Kiffin’s hopeful Championship run.
