About Me:
I get goosebumps for exciting victories and tears for championship defeat (even if it's not my team). I thrive on football and hockey, but I'll watch almost any sport - and give me enough time, I'll be obsessed. I cheer for the underdog if I don't have a set team preference for a specific game - and I'm thrilled when the Cinderella team wins it all (as long as it's not against my team!) Pro-retirement ceremonies are one of the very few things that can make me cry but I always watch them anyway. I LOVE road trips and anything outdoorsy - but my idea of *A* perfect day is spent curled up in an overstuffed chair with sunflower seeds and a drink, the Q on the laptop, the NFL on from morning through afternoon and the NHL in the evening on a big screen TV. Color me happy...but call me lazy.

Up Close and Personal with Jess - Vol.1
by Jess Jess

So...I've never done one of these before - it's always hockey or site related stuff. Well - I guess to know me is to know I love my sports and this site quite a bit - so I guess in its own little way that could be considered personal too. First of all, I guess I should warn you...I like my little dashes and ellipses quite a bit, and I probably use them a little excessively. If you're reading this, you probably already know that about me because no doubt you've seen my comments here and there in the forums. But I digress...

I originally just wanted to post this in our videos section but then I kind of wanted to share why the song means so much to me....but that got really long and that just seemed a little silly to put in an intro or something. Also, when I was in youtube getting the code I noticed it had this really cool customizable color thing with it...well I had to blog it then because I'm easily amused like that...

I know this is a breakup song, but it means something a little and a lot different to me. Doesn't make sense? Let me explain - there are a few reasons why this song touches me the way it does. Not the least of which is that it's just an amazing piece of music - and I absolutely love Gavin & Co. (I know with this crew I can't say that I love the band...pervs). When I was first starting to gain my independence from my first husband and decided to start moving my stuff out, a friend of mine let me borrow his truck. He had this CD, and I listened to it quite a lot - so this song partially represents freedom and some sort of revelation to me.

Another reason is just a little sad, but it's still something I hold on to and probably will forever. When my dad was diagnosed with cancer my brother moved in with my parents to help out. This was nearly 7 years ago now, but for some reason I remember him strumming away on his guitar - and while I know he learned this song long before then (before I'd ever even heard it actually...which is why I started liking it in the first place), it's the only one I distinctly remember him playing those times that I was visiting. It was a very difficult time in my life - but for some reason the mellow strumming of this song coming from my brother's guitar was somewhat comforting.

Now it serves as my ring tone whenever my husband calls me...simply because the majority of my phone calls come from him and I wanted to make sure to use a song I knew I wouldn't get sick of. So now (most of the time) when I hear it coming from my phone, there's a bit of a smile behind it because my hubby's calling me.

I was going to cover a few other things too, but since this went a little long, I'll have to save it for Vol.2. Hopefully my little Fan Articles area won't turn into a narcissistic module.

Are there any songs that hit home with any of you like that? Share in comments, I'd love to hear I'm not the only one who puts so much stock into one song...

I work with computer mapping, and before the computers, we drew on mylar and linen maps using ink and pencil, mostly to keep up with taxation and ownership of property. I had a friend of my who was a surveyor that went to high school with me, and due to continuing contact through surveys and plats, we remained friends through the years. He was married and had a son about 8 when he was diagnosed with Lupus, which he eventually succumbed to the disease at the age of 45. This was a guy who loved life, his family, music, and people; he just had a great big heart, and one heck of a sense of humor. One of the last things he was able to do was attend a Tom Petty concert, a bunch of friends carried him to it and brought him back to home. Shortly after that in a visit I had with him, he talked about a song Petty sang at the concert that had become his theme song. "I won't back down" was the name the song. He especially spoke of the part where it says,'you can stand me up at the gates of Hell, but I won't back down'. That was how he fought his fight, and the song has since become an inspiration to me as well, especially as I went through an unwanted divorce that involved two daughters. So, I guess, maybe that is kinda what you are talking about? Not sure... but that was a great blog, Jess.

"Follow You, Follow Me" by Genesis always hits me for some reason. To me, it's the perfect love song. If by some miracle I get married, I want that song to play at the wedding.

As for a song that moves me The Smiths "How Soon is Now?" pretty much destroys.

It's one of the greatest CD's  - I love the whole thing. I like all of Bush's stuff actually - Gavin's voice is amazing.

I'm going to think on the song and come back.  I did want to tell you Jess (after you confessed your love of dashes and ellipses) I had a warm fuzzy moment remembering how you once reassured me after I confessed a similar love for parentheses and you said something along the lines of how the parentheses are hugging our words and how cool I thought that was.     I'll be back with a song or two.
