With as much information at Peter Gammons dispenses throughout the baseball season, it's always been hard to believe he has time for another hobby. But the Hall of Famer is also very passionate about rock music and the blues and is quite the musician himself.
In honor of the 100th year anniversary of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," and to help kill some time this summer, ESPN is running a Battle of the Bands series where nine musicians and groups will compete over who can perform the best rendition of baseball's classic song.
It was only fitting, then, that Gammons would get the contest started with his very own tribute to Bo Diddley. Very impressive, the man can rock. Unfortunately, "The Commissioner" isn't eligible for the contest, which might be a good move because I have little doubt he'd win in a landslide.
Rock on indeed! I give Gammons credit for stepping out from his comfort zones of baseball and television. His guitar work is blues-oriented and sounds good. Singing is so-so, but that's what rock is all about. Right?
